She got a call yesterday at 5:00 from the Dean of Admissions of USNA. She has better than average SAT/ACT scores and is still taking each of those. Her leadership is off the hook though: Girl Scout Silver and Gold Awards, President of her student body, President of Nation Honor Society, President of Jr. Civitan, Vice President of Beta Club, Wing Commander of her high school's AF JROTC (many awards in JROTC) 200 hours of community service, team captain of Cross Country(2 years) Team captain of Track team(2 years) plus various other non applicable leadership qualifications. Athletecs include: Varsity Cross Country 5 years with a letter award each year, Varsity teack with one letter, MVP and Most Improved awards, Perfect PT score 2 years in AF JROTC, Passed CFA at all three academy Summer Seminars.
Academics: top 6% of class, ranked 26th of 470, GPA= 3.666/4.439., Has taken AP classes as often as possible.

I hope this helps all of you get a feel for where you all are. My family is pulling for you all on this journey!!!!

Congrats to your DD but confused- She had a JROTC nom, right? so did she receive a LOA or an appointment?? Also would you mind sharing her ACT/SAT scores? Enjoy this happy time!!:shake:

Congratulations to you and your daughter, 1987jsd!

crair70: The initial "offer" at this point would be a LOA unless all requirements are met, including medical qualification and at least one nomination. If all those requirements have already been met, the "Big Fat Envelope" containing a beautiful Blue Folder and letter officially offering an Appointment will follow very quickly.

The LOA is just a form letter with the candidate's name inserted. Copies are automatically sent to the MOCs which make gaining a nomination almost a slamdunk certainty unless the candidate does (or says) something during the MOC/BGO interview that is incredibly stupid. The letter guarantees an appointment with the stipulation that the indicated, uncompleted items be satisfactorily completed. There is a generic "laundry list" of items on the letter. There is a checkbox by each item. There will be a check in those boxes which are incomplete. It is very common to not have a nomination at the time of the LOA and that box is usually checked. It's also not unusual to have the DoDMERB medical exam remaining to be completed.

Despite the stories about LOA awardees not getting nominations; that is about as common as 4-leaf clover. The reason you hear about it is because it is so rare and it sends shockwaves throughout the admissions world; which usually makes its way into this forum leaving one with the false impression that this is a real possibility. It's not a real possibility. It's a remote possibility.

My DD does not have a nom or an appointment. She was told her LOA was in the mail and that she will be getting it in this week.
Her file has been complete for a little while now and she was told it was completed pretty early. As far as her scores, ACT/SAT...she is shy about sharing those for what ever reason and i respect her wishes. Her scores are above average and she will be taking them again and again to increase them further. Sorry and thank you! I wish all of you the best of luck!

you mention she is involved in JROTC- she doesn't have a JROTC nom?? Also confused as to why she would be retaking SAT/ACT with an LOA unless the USNA is not her first choice? I didn't think improving her scores would be necessary if she received an LOA?

She is in AFROTC so unless it is a unit of distinction, or whatever the AF calls their outstanding units, she is not eligible for a nomination to USNA, only to AFA.

She still has to jump the MOC nomination hurdle. Some districts are extremely competitive and she may feel she needs the extra push from a better-than-above-average SAT score to ensure a nomination.

My DD does have other irons in the fire. She has not totally made up her mind and all candidates should have more than one back up plan, (Not all colleges she applied to has given her an acceptance letter). Navy is however, where she can see herself attending for sure.

Good, retake the SATs.

Even if USNA were her first and only choice, there is no predicting what could arise in her medical exam (God forbid, but something unknown to you like a mild heart arrhythmia), and DODMERB waivers will be very, very hard to come by this year. Yours wouldn't be the first to get the medical exam report and read about some disqualifying condition you had no clue about. Beyond that, she could sustain a non-waiverable injury between now and I-Day that would DQ her.

Always have a Plan B. Plans B, C, etc. require the best possible SAT scores.

Congratulations.

She was told that she is qualified medically, physically, and academically (USMA told her this as well) No one can say weather or not we will be here tomorrow or next year but her plan B is The Citadel ( where she has been accepted and is being recruited for Cross Country) and her plan C is VMI. Outside of those 4 opportunities, which includes USMA, we feel she should be set. BUT WHO KNOWS?

She should be. Congrats!!

Still, let me ask a question. I'm not familiar with quals/requirements for VMI,Citadel but I'd assume there is a physical, medical requirements for both? If so, would it make any sense to gain an acceptance to a place not having that issue? It is most likely a moot point, but she's obviously top-shelf and things happen. Just wondering ...

Not sure if i understand your question, but I went to The Citadel and she loves the fact that there are choices that have structure. She wants an education with a little dificulty on the side, and with the added bonus of serving her country in the end.

I had the same concern as WP; what if she tears up her knee running track in the spring? (knock wood) Will VMI or The C still enroll her? If the answer is no, then a plan D is in order.

I'm sure it will be difficult to attend any military school in a cast. Anything less than that is still a possibility because these are liberal arts colleges that do not require a commitment of any kind. The day I graduated from The Citadel I took a couple of weeks off and started looking for a job without a care in the world. All of the incoming plebes are subjected to injuries prior to arriving for duty on R of I day. If this does happen, she will arrive that day, go to the admissions office, grab her LOA for the next year, go home and enroll in the local college. I know this to be true because it happened to someone I know. So... My DD is very determined to go to a service academy and if it is Navy then she will be honored, but if Army comes knocking...who knows. We should all be proud of these young people for all their hard work and I wish each and everyone of them the best of luck. Thank you for your input and I welcome anything else you have to add!

So Citadel does allow injured students to be enrolled? Then you have your backup plan.

Clarification, and you may not have meant USNA, but LOAs may be received in ensuing years but none are carried over or extended for ensuing seasons of appointment. They are "admit one" tickets" good for only one specific I Day @ USNA and I believe at USMA as well.
