I'm nearly done with the USNA application process. I'm still working on nominations. I took the DoDMERB about a month and half ago. When I got back the results, it said I was qualified at the Naval Academy (as well as at the other academies I'm applying for).

However, it did warn me in fine print on the back of the sheet, that Annapolis only accepts a certain number of candidates with vision worse than 20/40. One of my eyes is at 20/50, so this definitely affects me.

My question is, how many candidates total does the Naval Academy accept with vision worse than 20/40?

Is your vision 20/50 or correctable to 20/50?

There's plenty of people here with poor vision (I was one of them until I got my scientifically enhanced laser eyes), but if it's not correctable to 20/20 you may have issues.
This is interesting to be because I've never heard of there being a bad vision "quota." I'd always assumed medical was more of a "check in the box" thing unless you had a condition that would automatically med DQ you from URL communities like colorblindness.

Aye, if you're correctable to 20/20 you should be fine. If that one eye is only correctable to 20/50, you'll have quite a few problems in the military regardless of how you pursue a commission.

How difficult is the process for getting a waiver on eyesight if you are deemed not qualified? DS has not yet gotten his DoDMERB results back from USNA (he medically qualified at USMA already) but his BGO told him that USNA has tighter standards for eyesight and DS wears glasses. Should I plan to get his optometrist to provide proof of correctability to 20/20 in both eyes? I guess I should have DS ask his BGO this as well, but I also figured someone else here may have been in this situation.thanks!

You won't need to do anything further if the exam has already been submitted unless your son is found to be out of standards (not correctable to 20/20, color deficient, greater than 8 diopters, etc). If one of those is not met then he will require a remedial which will likely start with a request for more information.

Thanks kp2001! We'll wait and see (pun intended ).

Just got the news today that DS has been deemed "not correctable to 20/20". As I stated, he has already been deemed qualified by USMA. In the letter he is encouraged to supply any additional information he wants in order to appeal, but I read here on the SAF that USNA will initiate the appeal/retest if they find him competitive. Is this mostly a push process (where we send in the info) or a pull process (where we wait and USNA will contact us if there is to be a next step)?
