I have seen on a lot of NROTC websites that you can get commisioned as naval surface warfare officer. Could someone provide a job description on that? Thanks in advance.

Surface Warfare Officers are the officers who work aboard ships (except for the air wing on carriers.)

Surface Warfare is the war fighting technique employed by commanders of boats that float on the top of the ocean to keep them safe from boats that don't float on the top of the ocean.

Also see "Targets" and "Death from Below"

Ooogaa!

Surface warfare?

Heck, we're the REAL Navy, with a heritage that goes back several thousand years.

(in before the "sodomy and the lash" jokes...)

I am reminded of a speech that the NROTC guy told a bunch of HS students last year at Texas A&M open house for pre-cadets (my DS among them). He said that why in the world would anyone in the right mind pick the Marines or the Army over the Navy. They fight in the mud, he said. He fights, he said, by going over to an instrument panel and pushing a button to launch a missle and then having a steak dinner that night. It didn't persuade my DS -- he is still intent on a Marine commission.

My Father is a retired Navy Captain.....his argument (very similar) didn't work on me back in the 70's either.

But have no fear, My Grandfather, the Retired China Marine, took the time to inform me how we Marines were the MEN'S department of the US Navy.

That's a *great* line. I will be sure to relay that to my son.

don't know whether subs are "more noble", but do know that the USNA could't get 132 out of 1000 last year (or several years prior) to "select" subs, so needed to "draft" quite a few to get to the 132 mission set.
