I hope someone can help me understand NROTC Alternative Scholarship Reservations (ASR). DD applied for a NROTC Alternative Scholarship Reservations (ASR) an got it. It is a guaranteed NROTC scholarship??? What is different between ASR and regular NROTC scholarship??? Thanks

Yes, it is a reserved NROTC scholarship similar to the ISR (Immediate Scholarship Reservation). It just has different requirements, and I don't see a commitment to a technical major.

Link to ASR requirements. It guarantees a scholarship will be held for your daughter if she complies with the requirements. Does not guarantee first choice of schools.

Hope this helps.

Looks like its something aimed at minorities and sounds similar to the ISR which is "guaranteed"... but I can't tell if it's really just an ISR from another source or not. Anyway, although it may be somewhat dated, you can find out more info here:

Congrats to your daughter. :thumb:

I believe they also use a portion of them to award scholarships to applicants that are not quite as strong academically, but have demonstrated other qualities(particularly in leadership) where the Board feels that they have the potential to be good Navy officers.

Congrates to your DD!

kinnem: per your link, and trying to cut through the eggshell tippy toe language, it looks like ASRs are for 1) Junior ROTC participants who would not qualify academically for scholarship outside the ASR program, and 2) diversity applicants in the same academic situation . The circular does not mention Diversity per se, but in one paragraph the reservation of scholarship for use at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and ASR are lumped together thematically.

This really points back to the Secretary of Defense's mandate in approx. Dec. of 2008 that the Service Academies and ROTC MUST produce officers that match the ethnic/ratial diversity of the Enlisted force. Neither the Academies, ROTC, or the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff for that matter, have any say in that matter.
