Are Plebes considered active duty? If so, do they qualify for Military discounts? i.e. Southwest Airlines.

Yes, they do qualify for military discounts. However, last time I booked with Southwest, the customer service rep advised that I could get a better discount if I booked online. Sure enough, booking online was cheaper than the military discount. With no bag or flight change charges, Southwest has a lot of other airlines beat in my book.

My Mid only used the SWA government/military discount once. There was little (if any) difference in price from the cheapest listed fare. At that time (~3 years ago), the discount was granted for a specific seat on a specific flight. That made any sort of flight change (You need to report back on Friday, not Monday....) a real hassle in comparison to making changes via the "regular" SWA method.

Yes they are considered active duty. In addition to airlines, discounts are available at local resturants, theaters, some places even give free admission, Amtrak gives a 10% discount, they can shop in NEX and Commissaries, etc...

That's the good news. The bad news is: Yes, they're considered active duty.

They'll travel in uniform (4/C & 3/C). If they get sick while they're home they can't just go to your family doctor. Leave dates are always an uncertainty until the last minute. Your weekend visit might not happen if he pulls duty.

Isn't it great?

Sometimes it's even no cost. I tended to ask everywhere I went when I was on AD. For instance my visit to Mt. Vernon was free.

Also both Lowe's and Home Depot have a 10% discount.

So if my daughter gets sick, where can we go? We live in Round Rock, Tx.

It it's an emergency/urgent, she should go to the nearest medical facility, regardless if it's civilian or military. She must tell them she's active duty military. In such situations, the military will (eventually) pick up the cost.

If it's not an emergency but cannot wait until she returns to USNA -- and there is literally no military facility (any service) within many miles, she's probably ok going to the civilian MD. She should check on this with USNA before she leaves.

However, she should NOT go to a civilian MD/dentist for routine medical/dental care. Those days are over. The military will provide all the routine care service members need.

In any event (emergency/non-emergency) you should call USNA Brigade Medical and/or TRICARE to inform them or seek guidance (depending on the case).
