today i received a C on my first 9 weeks grading period ( 18 week semester)...what impact will this have on my chances of getting into USNA????

It won't have any if you work your tail off and get an A for the semester. Earning a C for the semester in chemistry would send a poor signal to USNA on your academic ability. I believe high school chemistry is the #1 indicator of how well you do academically at the SAs.

Not true...I only took one HS chemistry course and got my only B of HS and I am still here....They want well rounded students who can succeed under the pressure of Plebe year.

BUT, I am doing really well in Pre-Calc, Physics, and AP History

Just try your hardest to bring that grade up to at least a B, but like i said, they want well rounded individuals. Those other classes are all really good ones to prepare for USNA! :thumb:

so do they just look at semester grades????(opposed to 9 week grades)

I'm only a parent but it seems to me they will only look at the grades on your transcript, which will be your final grade and not your interim grades.

Yes, it is the grades that go on your transcript, so it depends on when your High school publishes grades. Generally most school publish only semester.

Yeah, get a tutor for 3-4 hours and bring your C up to a B. Cs really stick out in the worst way in selective college admissions

Why shoot for a B??

We need to be considering this situation on at least TWO levels: getting in to Annapolis, and passing what is considered one of the toughest freshman chemistry courses in the country. You most certainly have to raise your grade to AT LEAST a B, but more importantly you need to develop an understanding and proficiency in the subject to be able to pass college level chemistry! Yes, NAVY is going to judge you based on your semester grades, so you get a break there.

In a few short months this site will be filled with tales of woe and angst from candidates who haven't gotten a LOA or appointment and are stalking their mailmen daily. This happens every year, unfortunately. The best defense is to start early to make yourself the very best candidate you can become! IOW, do what you know inherently you should be doing, striving to do your best all across the board. The area I work in as an AC and BGO is extremely competitive. Each year we sent between 12 and 16 appointees to USNA from an area which should be sending between 6 and 8. At the same time, we will have 5 or 6 highly qualified candidates who will not be selected. That is why my counsel to all candidates is that you NEED to do your best to be your best. If nothing else, at least you won't be beating yourself up because you didn't do your best when you could. Only you know when you have done your best. Good luck and start doing your best while you can.
