Vanderbilt is a classless institution

After their victory tonight, Vanderbilt played their alma mater. The Army team stood at attention for the duration, out of respect. Thereafter, the players moved in front of the Army fans for the playing and singing of the USMA alma mater. The Vanderbilt stadium immediately started blaring "I Feel Good" over the PA system, drowning out the cadets. Kudos to the cadets and grads for singing the alma mater regardless.

Vanderbilt should be ashamed. I hope the Comm, who was present, voices his displeasure in no uncertain terms.

Vandy, you are classless. I'm ashamed that my wife is in your employ.

I don't remember the midshipmen standing for Air Force's alma mater this year either. Of course, it wasn't the most organized singing either...I didn't even know AF had their band at the game.

Please tell me they don't fly cadets around for football games...

Cadets are flown for certain things, like the spirit section. It's paid for via donations to the Army Athletic Association.

With one notable exception they absolutely stood for the AFA alma mater. My Mid was right next to us on the far other end of the stadium and was at attention the entire song - as were all of the other Mids (and alum) in view.

The ones I was watching were heading for the main concourse. I'm not 100% sure everyone knew what was going on at the time....I was on the other end of the field.

I'm not sure what the procedure for pre-game, halftime, and post-game entertainment is at Vandy, but usually the athletic department of the visiting team contacts the host team and advisies them if they have a tradition they do that is not standard. Usually at most schools there is time for both home and visiting teams' bands to perform a piece post-game. If no visitor band is present, the folks in the booth will move on to whatever other entertainment they usually wrap things up with (exit music).

Could there have been a miscommunication to the booth about the USMA singing of their alma mater?

BTW, I have no interest in Vanderbilt and actually have an interest in a rival school. Just trying to be charitable...

I've heard of these types of incidents before and it is usually because someone didn't get the memo about a post game tradition.

If this was the first time Army played at Vandy, I'd give that credence. But it's not. So I don't.

I know at many schools, you've got students running the entertainment, especially the post-game disc-jockey stuff. May be as simple as some moron sophomore who didn't think to ask and had never been to an Army game...

So I've given you an option of stupid to add to classless.

I understand your disgust at the happening.

I understand your general unhappiness with this...

I feel the same way when I hear a member of another service say "well it's not military" when referring to the Coast Guard. I generally refer to those members in much the same way you've referred to Vanderbilt. Often I also refer to those services in the same way you referred to Vanderbilt. I have no doubt that the students of Vandy were unaware that something was supposed to happen. I'm sure they're used to just pouring out of the stadium after a game. Knowing the general relative conservative nature of Vanderbilt (with respect to many other universities), and the support the university gives their ROTC programs, I don't think their intent was to piss of a bunch off cadets who were able to travel from the crappy surroundings of West Point to the wonderful city of Nashville on someone else's dime.

As far as the SEC's concerned, Vanderbilt is about as far from "intellectually bereft" although I can think of a few SEC schools that description does apply to.

I didn't realize big tough Army guys were so sensitive!

I don't care one lick if the bowtied and cocktail-dressed white suburban detritus that constitute the Vanderbilt student body stay for our alma mater. I really don't. I don't care if their typically ignorant, self-absorbed, educationally vapid SEC touchdown machines...I mean "student athletes"...stay for the alma mater. All I ask, just like every other grad, is that you do our team the basic respect of not playing a damn song over our alma mater, especially after we stood in silence out of respect to the host school's song.

3 weeks ago.......

Texas A&M + SEC =

Why? Prior to last Saturday, they were ranked higher than 3/4 of the SEC. That conference needs more than one school with class and players who lack criminal records. All you have right now is Vanderbilt.

Tonight......

...Vandy, you are classless. I'm ashamed that my wife is in your employ.

And that's why they're a garbage school. Typical of the classless and generally intellectually bereft SEC.

Sounds like someone has changed their opinion about Vandy.

You bet I have. Having been to many Vandy functions, I was under the impression that Vandy might be the exception to the classless SEC rule of mediocre academic institutions whose sole emphasis is sports. Tonight they proved me wrong. From booing the Army team's entrance to cheering Trent Steelman's injury to drowning out our alma mater, they've proven themselves to be no better than the Alabamas and LSUs of the NCAA. So yes, I've changed my opinion. Sometimes, an institution leaves you no choice. I realize you're an intractable SEC homer, but I would think even you would find such behavior abhorrent.

Wait! You're mad because the booed Army's entrance? WOW....softer gentler Army!

I realize you're an intractable SEC homer...
Not as much as you think. Just an Auburn fan (It's really OK if you don't bring up the massacre they suffered today against LSU). And thank you for not putting Auburn in the same sentence as you did Alabama and LSU.

.... but I would think even you would find such behavior abhorrent.

Absolutely. Glad I wasn't there to witness that.
Lest you forget - I have totally drunk the West Point Kool-aid. I am as big a fan of West Point and Army sports as I am of my alma mater, Auburn (one of the 'classless SEC rule of mediocre academic institutions whose sole emphasis is sports'). Just like I am for the college where my husband is in graduate school and the college that my daughter will go to next year.
Being an 'elite' school does not necessarily equate with being a classy school.
You and I both have been to football games where Army is not playing another SA and the opposing team honors Army's team with respect while the Alma Mater is played and sung by the cadets and grads.
Maybe the 'classless SEC' has been a bad influence on Vandy and they are now on the same level as rest of us classless schools in the SEC.

Um, yeah, the AF band was there. And won the Interservice Trophy (the D&B equivalent of the CIC Trophy). Not their fault Navy stuck them in the back corner of the stadium so you couldn't see them during the game!

Vanderbilt issues apology to USMA

Statement from Vanderbilt University

To all of the men and women who attend and work at the United States Military Academy, their families, all graduates of USMA and their fans:

We at Vanderbilt University would like to publicly offer our sincere apology for the events that occurred at the conclusion of our recent football game. While our football team performed our alma mater with our fans and band, the Black Knights, their band and cheerleaders, as well as their fans, stood at attention and honored us as would a worthy foe. However, after we were finished and the Black Knights began to perform their alma mater, our football team left the field and our loud speaker blasted music that had the result of drowning out the performing of your alma mater.

While there was no intention to be disrespectful, this was wrong and was a huge mistake on our part. There is no excuse for this oversight; we were just wrong and we are truly sorry.

Make no mistake, the people at Vanderbilt University, our alumni and fans respect all that you do and have done for this nation. We are honored by what you stand for and we understand that this was not the way you should have been treated.

On behalf of Vanderbilt University, please accept our apology for this mistake and oversight of your important protocol. You deserved better and we have learned from our mistake. We request your forgiveness.

Respectfully,

Vanderbilt University

It makes me feel better...lol. But Im sure their fans have all but forgotten about it
