My DS just received his LOA in the mail yesterday indicating that he has been accepted to USMMA pending congressional nomination. He has had one interview so far and will have two others within the next month (with senators / congressman). I am just trying to get a feel for the likelihood of him receiving a nomination. In other words, which is harder -- getting the LOA or getting the nomination? How excited should he be that he has gotten his LOA? What percentage of applicants receive a LOA but then do not get the nomination?

Congratulations!

You guys should be very excited about his LOA. I do not know the exact numbers, but not very many are given out. Our DS received one for class of 2013, and it makes a big difference in the admissions process. If he has not already done so, your DS should send a copy of his LOA to his nomination sources. They will be much more likely to give him a nomination when they see that the school really wants him. Good luck with the rest of the process.

Getting the LOA is much tougher than the nomination. Congrats to your family and welcome to ours.

My DS received an LOA as well, and made sure he sent copies to his nominating authorities. In addition, he brought it with him to the interviews. Net result was he received two nominations to USMMA, as well as West Point, Air Force, and Annapolis. The LOR is definatels the harder piece of the puzzle to get. Best of luck.

First off , Congratulations! I remember the day that letter came, yes i opened it before ds came home! But then i ran up to school and got him out of class to give it to him. Our high schools office was helpful in faxing and helping gathering documents, and ds made many phone calls during school hours to gather out of state information, etc. So they were happy to help thankfully. You really have heard the best answers already but you can mine for even more information on this site. I read every thing over and over I could get my hands on trying to glean that one tidbit of information the made me feel it was all going to work out. You can see state by state the breakdown of students currently enrolled. You can get information form your states Parents Association. You can research previous nominations through Newspaper articles. You can make yourself crazy! That is the fun of it. That was really all I could do because really it was all up to DS. He did his part and the results were what we had hoped for. Good luck! Keep us posted with your progress and ask all the questions you have along the way. :thumb:

Thank you to everyone for your responses. Quick question since I'm new to this forum and don't always know all the acronyms... what does MOC stand for?

Sorry I should have been more specific. Welcome to the boards and if you have any questions you do not want to post you can always pm (private message) any of us regulars. Just click on a name and a pronpt to send a private message will come up. Good luck with the process (we have been there and survived).

Any other LOAs out there?

I checked back and this was about the time they started showing up last year.

Congrats!

If you guys dont mind just telling me your childs numbers (gpa sat sports, EC, ect..) my son is a junior and really wants to go to USMMA but were just trying to get an idea of the number

'conditional'

Hey guys,
I checked on the candidate site for USMMA and my application status says conditional. People are saying it means an LOA in hard copy is on the way, but I don't want to get too excited if that's not true. What does conditional mean?

Yes, that is an LOA. Congratulations! You just have to meet the conditions, usually just pass CFA, get a nom, keep your grades up.

Awesome! Thank you! Yeah I scored pretty high on my CFA (maxed out in pushups, pullups, and situps), now I just got to get my nomination. Should I email my congressman saying I got an LOA or should I send him a hard copy? And for grades, I have an unweighted 3.0 as of now, which is pretty bad I know. You think they can revoke my appointment if they see that? Thank you once again.

Em 23 you have all year to get your grades higher. Just don't let them go lower. So now while all your friends have senioritis you will be locked on and making yourself even better! I think there are more important things than just GPA. Your commitments and EC's rank high as well. I remember thinking that everyone who got in was the 4.0+, valedictorian, Captian of the football team, , Eagle Scout, who builds houses for the poor on the side! I think commitment to one sport or activity matters ie, band or swimming or xc, showing you have an in-depth interest and passion for something. That said you must be a good athlete and maybe you have lettered in multiple sports. Also what you do outside of school matters such as work history and unusual EC's. What I am trying to say is the more well rounded candidate the better. If you already have the Conditional Status you just have to keep on being the best you you can be. And don't do anything stupid! See a beer at a party,,,,,,:zip:
EXHALE and keep it up!:thumb:

2 more steps

Got to pass the physical exam. And then keep your self out of harms way. Dont injure yourself by doing a stupid senior prank, and then spend your last 2 months worried about whether it would heal in time. Ask me how i know.

Thanks for the advice guys! Good luck to any other sons or daughters who wish to be part of class 2016!

Bugsy, I'll bite. How do you know? You "conditional" kids should start a thread with a list that can be added to as more updates come out. Look back through the threads from last year around this time. The trhreads are really cyclical and the same topics are covered again witha new group. Do some reading and you may even come up with some more questions!

I got my LOA in the mail Friday, had my interview with Sen. Mark Warner yesterday. I brought my LOA, the interviewers all seemed pretty impressed

Definitely recommend bringing your LOA along to the interviews if you have one.
