Upon checking DS's online application, the following statement is now present below Application Status:

Your Status: Candidate*

IMPORTANT NOTE – Due to recent Secretary of the Air Force mandates, the number of appointments for the Class of 2016 will be the smallest in recent history. As a result, respective candidate appointment information will not be provided until the later part of March and final notifications will not be completed until the first week of April. Admissions appreciates your understanding and patience.

It's going to be a long Winter.

That is what I believe. I called admissions about a week ago and they said that the most up to date info was that LOA's would not be sent out this year (the only people who might receive them would be recruited athletes).

I am a recruited athlete for swimming just like the other poster's DS who received a BFE last week... I am trying my best to do the best I can... We shall see!

And EXPENSIVE putting down all these deposits holding the son's place at schools and housing departments!

Thank you sports and my DD's dedication...the thousands of invested dollars and family sacrifice over the past 10 years have paid off in a big way. Do you think that waiting until March/April to provide LOA's will serve as a battle of attrition? Maybe they are banking on candidates going with plan B or C and just sticking with it and shelving the USAFA. Many colleges have already sent out their early acceptance letters and I bet a lot of kids will just go with the bird in the hand.

You may have a point about attrition, but I'm just regarding all of the plan X-Y-Z expenses as part of the (painful) process. We really don't have a choice - for example at AU - the application fee is $200 and now that we've paid it, we will be sent the application for housing instructions which will be $300 - app fee and pre-payment - good housing fills up QUICK there. Times this by 3 or 4 schools to make sure we have options and you're talking some real money here...

But what else can you do? "Grin and Bear it" comes to mind...

Well, if your child is admitted to USAFA, then your insurance payment for backup plans will be a small price to pay. Then your only problem will be paying taxes on that big 529 plan that you will have to cash out!

You're right! That's my position  With what I'm going to save (I expect wherever he goes, he'll get some significant merit based scholarships - he already has almost a full ride at one school) - and that's not including any ROTC scholarship - the board meets in Dec for that. I think I'll just put it away for... GASP...Labored Breathing... OK- I'll say it... GRANDKIDS!!!!!:eek::eek:

It even Halloween too!!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Best to you

I heard today our class was expected to graduate with less than 600. Kids are dropping like flies..

Attrition

According to the USAFA Admissions facebook site, as of October 20, the Class of 2015 was still at over 1000. So, unless a significant number of the cadets are on probation, I'm not sure why there would be an assumption that it would drop to 600 by graduation.

I also was checking out the numbers in the Falcon Family news. In the last month the class of 2015 had only lost 5 members. This seems consistent with normal attrition rates. I know that they have clamped down, and are giving fewer second chances. It does not seem however, that there is a revolving exit door at this point. C/O 2014 has lost 19 since the end of June, but only 7 in the last month and they have the largest class right now.

Sounds like the cadet rumor mill.

COMPLETELY like the cadet rumor mill.

USAFA is not predicting anything like that. Trust me, if they were, folks would be talking about it. And by "folks" I mean those in positions of authority.

They're not.

This message also appeared on my account. Is this now on all candidate's statuses unless you have an LOA? I've only heard of one person who has an LOA so far...

Admissions Counselor stated yesterday that only recruited athletes may possibly receive LOAs.

I wonder if only recruited athletes will receive appointments before March?

I was going to ask the moderators about that. I'm interpreting the message just that way - For regular cadet candidates you won't know if you've been appointed (regardless if you've been picked internally already) till late March and the final mailing will be in late April. That's cutting it pretty close for a lot of folks - especially if they have scholarships to other schools - they'll be needing to commit by the first week of June in many cases to keep their slots there...

Best
