Knife or Multi-tool for sea?

Our DS is going to sea for the first time soon. The list says knife or Multi-tool. I was wondering what brand, model or style other mids have used and liked. He is a deckie. I appreciate any suggestions.
 
We purchased a bright yellow Spyderco knife from the Colorado Parents Association three years ago. DS said he used it all the time.

We bought one of each. Multi tool he said he should have and the knife he bought after other mids came back.
 
I would go with an easy opening knife as more important. One with a little knob on the blade that you can open one handed.

I spend a good bit of time underway- and can say that I would feel completely naked, powerless, and worthless if I did not have a leatherman on my belt- my current choice being the Charge. But I usually have a knife as well, and it is usually one of these. A few other things I never go to sea without-

Petzl Headlamp

I'm pretty hard on my gear, and I can say that all of these are pretty indestructible and can last well in an environment that tends to eat gear- as an example I still have my first Sabrelight that slipped off my belt going through a cargo hatch and fell 55' onto a steel deck and barely had a scratch.

Thanks so much, Deepsea. Any additional ideas for sea year would be greatly appreciated. We're having a hard time coming up with Christmas gifts. DS is 2015 B split.

I am partial to a Spyderco knife and a Pelican Flashlight. It is tough to travel with a knife these days, so I tend to pack that stuff in my checked bag when I travel on a survey job. I still have the first Pelican light that I started using over 20 years ago as an ABS Surveyor.

Now when I went to sea as an engineer, we didn't have such niceties. Most times I got by with my ship issued yellow and black flashlight (I forget the brand), generic pocket knife and Arkansas nut rounders (channel locks).
 
Thank you one and all. We now have just about everything ready to go and are eagerly awaiting his assignment. :thumb:

And just out of curiousity how many voyages did those channel locks stay locked in your Chief Engineer or First A/E's desk drawer until you got paid off? Or did you just not volunteer to show them your Arkansas nut rounders when you signed on....:wink:

Believe it or not, they were never confiscated. I carried them in the pocket of my coveralls every day. Of course once I really found out how damaging they could be, I only used them in emergencies. For most repair work, it was well worth the time to go and make up a bucket with the proper tools for the job. In the days before the Leatherman, we would also grind down one of the handles of the "Mississippi Knurling Tool" to be used as a flathead screwdriver. To be honest, I don't think that I stopped carrying them until I started sailing as Chief. I also never took any away, but I also made sure that their use was limited.

The original multi-tool......channel locks could also be used as a "chammer" or a "chy-bar" or valve-wrench......etc.....etc....etc....
