I know there are optional, competitive summer training programs but is there a required training course for contracted MS I cadets, in the summer between their freshman and sophomore year?

The only required summer training for a cadet going the MS1-MSIV route is LDAC after the junior (MSIII) year. A cadet that enters the program as an MSIII will attend LTC prior to their junior year.

philmont,

You are not contracted until you pass the PFT and submit the required paperwork (SS card, Birth Certificate, etc).

The college you attend may have you report before the traditional cadet for their ROTC program, but that varies unit by unit. It is not a AROTC requirement, it is school by school.

For example VT may require you show up 1 week prior to the non-ROTC freshman for orientation. Whereas, NCSU requires only 2 days prior. Not implying that is fact, just an example.

Both will mandate that you pass the PFT administered to contract. Until that point you are just a scholarship recipient not contracted.

OBTW, FYI, when you show up make sure you bring the SS card (not laminated) and your original BC to contract.

Copies or laminated will delay contracting even if you pass the PFT.

Additionally, understand that as a contracted books are paid for, but it is reimbursement, which usually occurs in Oct. You will shell out the money, and sometime in Oct/Nov they will pay it back. There is no credit in your child's account for books at the college in Aug.

They will also break the book stipend in 1/2. AFROTC is 900, that means 450 per semester. If the books cost 225, you get 225. There is no 225 credit to the next semester. If they cost 500, they pay you 450, they will not say you have 400 for next semester (Total 900; 1st 500, 2nd 400)

The devil is really in the details.

I believe AROTC works a little differently re: the book allowance. My son receives $600/semester regardless of the actual cost. I think his books this semester only cost about $215.00, but he received the full amount.

No, any training would be optional, such as CULP, or if he/she were lucky enough to obtain a summer training program such as Airborne or Air Assault, which for MS1's is very rare. Other then that there is no training that takes place over the summer between the freshman and sophomore year unless the battalion has training specific to that battalion.

Philmont's son is already a contracted MS1

You are correct on that, they just deposit $600.00 every semester to my son's account, he is responsible to buy his books and he can purchase them from wherever he likes. Whatever is left over after he purchases his books is his to keep, they do not track the costs. This was a good semester for him, books only cost $98.00. They also don't ask for any money back when the student sells their books at the end of the semester.

In Navy ROTC, the midshipman is scheduled into training after each of their freshman and sophomore years in college (CORTRAMID and Summer Cruise). Not so in Army ROTC... though the Army ROTC seems to have more weekend FTX type commitments than does Navy.

Very true Jcleppe! and he did receive $600 books allowance too. Good thing as his books were $571 :thumb:

I know.

I have one MS4 and one MS1 in school. The books for the freshmen were $565.00, the books for the senior were $98.00. Go figure.

Man , I wish I had that luck! Mine are always a steady 500 every semester...ugh

Just wait, next semester it will be 900. Our DS ly as a jr had 1 semester at 127 bucks, and the next at 795.

You are fortunate that the Army does it that way. AFROTC you must submit the bill, and you are reimbursed up to 450 per semester. The way it worked for us we were out 345 bucks the spring semester, even though they tell you 900, it states up to.

For incoming freshman, depending on your major, if you do not own a kindle or an Ipad, you may want to investigate that avenue, because certain schools now sell their books on kindle for 80% less. Our son does a mixture of hardback and kindle. DD is a dual major(english/journalism) with a minor in education so for her she can do all of them on kindle.

Just a thought for holiday presents. Think about it, if you get an Ipad for 400 bucks, or a kindle fire for 300, the savings in books would be well worth the upfront cost. Basically, one yr if you were to buy even all used books (avg 60 a book times 5 or 6 compared 10 bucks. = 250 savings a semester). For AROTC cadets since you don't have to submit the bill, that is easy money.
