Can somone summarize what is allowed and prohibited from being kept in a mid's room during the academic year? Does this vary greatly by class? Please advise if this is too broad. I'm just thinking of guitars, stereos, recreational sporting equipment, microwaves, iPods, hot pots/electric kettles, fans, etc.

It does vary by class. Plebes cannot utilize media so therefore cannot have anything (other than issued laptop) that allows for that. So as a plebe- no ipod (though you can have an iphone), speakers (some companies take away issued headphones), video game consoles, dvd's etc. You get all this back youngster year. Plebes also cannot have civvies. This is, of course, for the ac year. Plebe summer is totally different.

Anyone can have recreational sports equipment or instruments as long as it isnt gear adrift (meaning there is somewhere to put it so it isnt on the floor or sitting on a desk). Anyone can have fans.

Firsties can have a mini-fridge. Upperclass can have coffee makers (not sure what year you get this).

No one can have hot pots or microwaves or anything like that. Most companies have microwaves in the wardroom that anyone can use, even plebes. No one's supposed to have candles.

Thanks! How about a guitar?

are you asking if there is sufficient stowage to accomodate a guitar without it being "gear adrift"?

I might leave guitar at sponsor's house. Not sure your company mates want to hear it unless you're a star. And you won't have much time to play it other than on WEs.

You can leave guitars out (may depend on company) in a stand.
One of my classmates has a legit gym (mats, bench, bar, weights, kettle-bells) in his room, but he routed a chit up to our LT for that.

Coffeemakers are a 2/C privilege.

refrigs for 1/c ... And all are allowed the mess of pet mice that reside in the ceilings of Mother B! Like "Flowers for Algernon" :thumb:

From what I have seen, what is permissible varies from year to year and company to company. However, no matter what is permitted, you will not have time for a lot of "extras" and you will want to minimize any distractions. When touring 2/C son's room recently, he (and 2 roommates) had very little in their room. One is Chem major, other is Econ major and son is Oceanography major. Most of their time is spent studying.

"Flowers For Algernon". I loved that reference for Mother B. The stories of the mice in Mother B are priceless!!!! Nebula Award Winner.:thumb:

DS and roommates kept their camping/backpacking supplies above their ceiling tiles during their plebe year. DS had acoustic guitar in his room plebe year and this year (younster year) has his electric guitar that he uses with headphones. He did ask his chain of command before bringing this stuff. I know a couple of his fellow plebes who had bicycles, but obviously not until after plebe summer.

Just remember maintenance doing work in the ceilings over breaks. Has been found and happened before. Contraband comes tumbling down.:thumb:

Where did plebes keep bicycles?

Nothing is suppose to be stored in the overhead (yes, I know people do it), but nonetheless bulky items risk breaking the tiling and/or structure. As Hurricane mentioned, there are common spaces to store equipment (bikes, sporting gear, etc.). Point being, if you ask to store gear for a legitimate/useful purpose, it normally is approved via a special request chit.
