I just recently spoke with my tennis coach and he told me that it is a 100% certainty that I will receive a varsity letter this year since I am a returning senior. Can I go ahead and add the letter to my file?

I am in the same situation. Also I am guaranteed to be captain of the team as well yet its in Spring so I can not put it down. Plus our tennis coach retired and as of now we have no coach. But tennis is one of my high school's best sports so I know eventually we will get on track. But my liason representative said he expects that West Point will be making offers to people in my district after nominations are given by late January 2012.

You should not put down anticipated honors, activities, etc, no matter how sure you are about receiving them.
Why?
You may not receive them due to unforeseen and/or unfortunate circumstances.
For example - you may break your arm and not be able to play tennis this spring.

Having a varsity letter and not having one will probably make or break most applications. Typically a varsity "letter" is not officially awarded until after completion of the particular sport. For example, football may not have the awards banquet until late Jan or Feb. My thought would be to discuss with your ALO...I would say if you are 99% sure go ahead an check it off, but for some reason it does not happen, you better call admissions and let them know. Just my 2 cents.

Very true! I was told I was on track/"would get a" LOA, but I never got one! So no matter how well-intentioned and informed one might be about your status, you never really know until the time comes!

Your file should not contain any thing that you have not earned or received.
If you mark the 'Varsity letter' box and you do not have a Varsity letter, then that is dishonest.
Remember - this information is verified by a school official. Do you really want the school official to report that something you entered is not true?
Jayhawk2325 - You can always send your RC an email and let him know what the coach said.
