I would like to see what the applicant pool is like this year so I am making this thread to get everyone's abridged resume here to put it in perspective. Some people were kind enough to share their stats during the October board so I will compile them here for anyone else who is curious.

Congratulations to those who posted and thank you for posting, it definitely does help put things in perspective. To me it seems like being a team captain makes a huge difference in acceptance rate.
 
These were my stats when I was awarded the NROTC scholarship (Tier 1: Mechanical Engineering), some of the numbers have changed over the last few months.

And that's it. It's nothing close to some of the astronomical stats posted in these forums, but someone up there liked something.

So for those of you who get all sad reading this sort of thread, apply anyway. On October 17, I was surfing these forums, reading stats and being sad. By the end of October 18, I had an NROTC scholarship and an LOA from USNA.

Boy, that was a good day.

Jiller59...wow!! I though my kid did alot on his own, that's one well raised kid...outstanding!!

Though to match up to stats like that but it is what it is.

Not the best but he created his own footsteps.

SAT - 1800 - 1200 M&R - No prep ( He wanted to go into this knowing what he was truly about. A chance yes, but he has his ways.) I told him he should have did a prep. As I understand it the SAT & ACT is not looked at as a score. We were told they SAT & ACT are flagged, Green (my son) is the best area you can be, then yellow and I have no idea what happen after that.

Top - 15% of his class

GPA 3.64 - (Just went up, waiting on report)

We dont have and Jr. rotc programs in the area so I think that hurts. I think the other thing that might hurt is that he did not have any scouting exp. he was alway in a sport or hunting, hiking, and fishing with me.
Working (with siblings) on getting our dog certified as a therapy dog (Not on the application but it's nice ot put out there.)
 
Nuensis: there was never an intention on my part to make anyone feel bad; that was the reason I hadn't previously posted his stats - I am just so proud of my son. He has pushed himself...I pushed my dd and regretted it. I worried that he was taking on too much but he thrived. There will be so many different attributes that the board will look for - your volunteer work on the computers for the schools speaks volumes about you as a person and involved citizen.

I feel for all the candidates that are waiting...

Oh, no, I was not referring to your post, but rather threads like these in general. I am now a firm believer in not taking hard statistics seriously.

I remember spending so many nights in September and October looking at statistics, reading posts about LOAs and SAT scores, feeling my heart sink lower and lower and lower.

I still read plenty of stats on these forums; I frequently see someone with achievements far beyond mine and wonder how and why I got an LOA and a scholarship offer when there are much better candidates who did not. After all, my SAT scores were right around average for USNA, and if appointed, I will be in the precious 7-10% of appointees who did not participate in varsity sports.

I just wanted to provide some encouragement to those who at this point have begun to doubt their competitiveness or are hesitant to apply because of perceived shortcomings. I'm one of those guys who didn't think he'd get very far, and here I am.
 
Can't remember my son's stats exactly but roughly speaking:

4yr arotc
Accepted GA Tech and Big 10 school
Chemical Engineering

Stats got screwy because he spent junior year in Brazil on Rotary exchange
-School was in Portuguese, family spoke no English

SAT-National merit Scholar Finalist
1 B in a weighted class
All kinds of AP's
1 Yr Varsity Tennis (would have been two, if not for rotary exchange)
Quiz bowl -Captain won state
Science bowl Captain went to nationals
WEPO -Civics competition- won state went to nationals
Concertmaster School Orchestra-First Violin like a captain
4 yrs citywide youth orchestra-by audition- Assistant concertmaster
Minimal volunteering
Let's say he had to be very careful about whom he asked for references and recommendations. In High School, he was a bull who carried around his own china shop.

My impression is that his interview at the local University ROTC went well.

There was a glaring lack of sports, scouting, helping his fellow man.

On the other hand

1)he wasn't just competitive, he loves any competition. His blood pressure drops as pressure is applied.
2)There are only a few places in Brazil to take the PSAT. He found one and took an overnight night bus to get there. Scored high enough to earn get National merit scholarship.
3)He leveraged his Portuguese into taking AP Spanish his senior year. Languages are more and more important to the military.
4)He worried that his violin and lack of sports would peg him as a softy, so he set a goal to do as many pushups and run two miles as fast as anybody else.
5)He showed a commitment to Engineering

Bottomline, IMHO resourcefulness, persistence and ability to get along and adapt are the keys. Not everyone is born with empathy in the heart or born to be a leader. ROTC has done more in three months in those departments than my wife, positive adult role models, and I accomplished in 18 years.

In many ways, I think nuensis has the most impressive resume. He didn't sit around complaining about his school's crappy computers, he fixed them. If I am on a submarine under the polar ice cap when the alarms goes off, I would want nuensis on my boat more than anyone else.

You all sound great and super well grounded. For those applying, don't give up if you don't get a 3 or 4 yr scholarship. There are other paths to entry. Not giving up will speak volumes about you.
