Vehicle Inspection?

Has anyone's cadet had a cadre-performed vehicle inspection? My DS had one today, conducted by the ROO. He "failed" due to two tires' tread depth not being up to standard. He was made to sign a counseling statement and had to agree to buy tires by the end of the month.

I understand and appreciate the military's commitment to safety, but does ROTC's authority really extend this far?
 
My son's Battalion had the vehicle inspection yesterday, so apparently it must be AROTC-wide. The checklist they utilized was quite comprehensive, checking everything from turn signals to windshield wipers. He is an MS1 and currently does not have a car with him at college, so this is one inspection I KNOW he did well on!
 
My son has to produce his VA S/I at 5:15am before PT to his PMS, before he can drive home next week.
 
Interesting. It's a good thing they didn't do vehicle inspections when I was in ROTC!
 
Never had a vehicle or dorm inspection in 4 years of AROTC. There have been exceptions for "certain" dorms the cadre have targeted for specific inspections over the years though. I think vehicle inspections go a little too far unless they are willing to pay for the tires....GOTWAS during breaks are strictly enforced at my school, not sure about AROTC nation wide. That is about as invasive as ROTC gets for me at least.
 
concur...seems a little over the top. Safety briefs and vehicle inspections are part of our SOP. But, nowhere in the ROTC contract are there any requirements to maintain any vehicular standards. Of course you can't tell the ROO to stuff it, but I think the Battalion would have a tough time disenrolling you because you don't buy new tires.
 
I don't know the circumstances here, but presumably they are inspecting them to state standards. If that's the case and they tell you to get new tires then frankly they're doing you a favor. Is like to think they're doing these inspections now as the student's are about to head home for the holidays. If such an inspection were to help keep my DS safe I would be grateful.

Fortunately though, NROTC apparently doesn't do this. I suppose its because they are cars and not ships. :rolleyes:
 
I'm not certain there were any actual "circumstances" other than a battalion-wide vehicle inspection for all contracted cadets who keep a POV on campus.

We do not have any inspection requirements in this state, so I'm not certain what standards were being used.

I'm not questioning whether or not my DS needed tires - he most likely needs at least two - really only the cadres' authority to compel my son to spend a few hundred dollars before the end of the month for a non-ROTC expense.

Clarkson - I don't think disenrolling is at stake here, but my son is concerned about the counseling statement.
 
Roger...the barracks lawyer in me says it's a worthless piece of paper, since there is no contractual obligation to . My feeling is that counseling statement is more of an effort to be able to say "we told him" if anything happens.

I wouldn't worry about a counseling statement regarding this situation because it seems the piece of paper just serves as a "CYA" for the batt. Now later on if on he is filling out these counseling forms for EO complaints, low grades, alcohol problems or lack-luster PT scores then you can worry. :biggrin:

Perhaps it would be in due diligence to replace those tire as winter will almost be in full force soon, however it's up to his discretion.
 
Does their authority go that far? Absolutely, your sons/daughters are in the military now whether they like it or not. Yes, they are in ROTC and not Active Duty; however, the military is dead serious when it comes to travel safety and vehicle inspections can happen very frequently. In the Navy I haven't seen it as much as with Marine Corps units who usually require a supervisor to do one before any holiday or leave period.

Now, I've never heard of someone actually getting written up for "failing" as it is more of a safety check, but I can see them telling someone to buy new tires if the car wasn't safe.
