Could you please share what the first 24 months hold for a 2LT in the Engineer Branch, to include Engineer school syllabus? DS1 will be heading that way. Commissioning May '12 Thanks -Russ
 
That question is so open ended, you most liley won't get a detailed answer.
What type of Engineer is he going to be? The engineer branch is very vast, so not all Engineer 2LT's have the same job.
What type of unit is he going to?

Specify these things and I'm sure someone with knowledge of the career field will give you a nice highspeed answer.
 
If a cadet commissions as an engineer, how does he or she "select" what type of engineer assignment he gets?

Also, what is the daily life of combat engineer officers? Is it a combination of both infantry and engineering responsibilities?
Can they go to both Ranger and Sapper schools?

I'm not really sure how an EN officer selects what type of unit he/she gets sent to, but I know what type you voice plays a good part. Two recently commissioned 2LT's from my BN that branched EN have been trying to get into Sapper companies. They both got them and one is deploying very soon to Afghan in a route clearance PL slot.

I will ask them and see what exactly goes on to get these slots. Even though it is a long way away for you...
 
Tell your son to consider going to the US Army Geospatial Center, it's at the heart of a rapidly growing field, and develops a skill set that is in extremely high demand in the DA, DoD, and NGA

Generally you do not choose what assignment you get as far as unit. You choose a post and the tenant units will assign you as you're needed.
 
Yes. Though, it's rare to see people attend and complete both Sapper and Ranger. For his branch, going to Sapper School would be best.

I disagree with the comment above from Cisco - if you only go to one- THE school in the Army that has universal recognition is Ranger school.(NonMOS School that is, so I'm excluding SFAS and the Q course etc. As it is though, you won't find too many SF officers who don't have the Ranger tab along with the SF Tab..) It is the one school in the Army that exists to force you to your limits- it's not a tactical school it's a 61 day gut check and IMHO it has the greater cache by far. More importantly- it will teach something about yourself and your ability to carry on when you have lost 25 pounds and your feet are shredded from 2 weeks of immersion in Florida phase etc... I don't believe that you will find too many officers who will tell you that a new Engineer LT will be better served in his career with a Sapper tab than with the Ranger tab if you had to choose which to attend. Just my opinion- but I suspect it's shared by more than one guy who actually has spent some time with boots on.

Well, there's the old saying...

SAPPER...Sorry-Ass Piss-Poor Excuse for a Ranger.

I've never heard one like that about Rangers. Also, women go to Sapper. They don't go to Ranger.
