Hi :) I found out today I was awarded a 4 year type 7 scholarship with any major preference. I have until January 6th to reply, but I am also looking at an appointment to a military academy... It is my understanding that one should always accept a scholarship, but how do I list school choices if admissions decisions are not 100% complete?

I have been a lurker/poster for a long time now, and I am extremely grateful for every bit of advice given. I told my parents yesterday that I read on this forum the term "bubble wrap" before college and it stuck. Whenever I ask to to something (like going to get milk) I hear from upstairs "bubble wrap honey!!"

So thank you to everyone, and a very happy holidays.

AFROTC scholarships are not like Navy or Army scholarships, you do not need to get permission to change the scholarship to another unit. List the colleges you intend to attend and if you change your mind you can contact them later on. The only issue would be since it is a Type 7, the colleges must only charge IS tuition rate, if they charge more than you would need to convert it to a Type 2 3 yr, and that is where you need permission from them to do it. Traditionally it has always been granted.

The majority of SA candidates will hold onto their scholarship up to the very last moment, some do not decline it until after I day.

Congrats.

AFROTC scholarship acceptance....

Thank you very much for your kind words, the same to you and happy holidays.

Pima:
I noticed in another thread your question about my major choice listing on my scholarship.
Looking at my letter, it shows

Offer: 4 year type 7
Major: Any major

Then a paragraph about switching from a 4yr type 7 to a 3 yr type 2...

I only applied and was accepted to in state, public schools, so the type 7 would technically cover the same amount as a type 1 would for me, if I am understanding that correctly.

I was also confused on the major aspect, as AFROTC scholarships are not tied to schools, but majors with the majority in the technical or tier 1 field...?

Thank you for the clarification. I appreciate your help immensely.

Sounds like you received one of the "rare" non-tech scholarships. Congratulations!

Tech Required or Not????

DS received a 4 yr type 7 USAF ROTC in the mail yesterday. We are a little confused also. At the top it says:

Offer
4 years - Type 7
Any Major

However, in the body of the mail it says "Your selection is a significant first step on your journey to success and was based on your scholarship selection board ranking, academic major choice and the number of scholarships available in each academic category." Later in the letter when addressing switching from a type 7 to a 3 yr type 2 it refrers to a website that can answer questions and reads "This provides a listing of the AFROTC affiliated schools with in-state and out-of-state tuition rates, and the technical majors approved by the Air Force at each school."

DS has decided that his first choice would be to study Political Science but loves math also and put mathematics down as his major choice when he applied for scholarship. So, we are unsure if he has the ability to switch to Poli Sci or if the scholarship is contingent on his studying Math. Is it really "Any Major" or is needing to be a technical major???

It would appear that you were selected as a non-tech, understand non-techs can go tech, thus any major. Tech majors must go tech, if they want non-tech they need to get approval.

Our DS is govt, class of 12, back in his day you had to declare your intended major, thus the letter stated Type and than non-tech and than the major.

Stephanie,

Yes, since you are going IS it will be the same as a type 1 because they will cover the IS tuition.

Mom,

It appears it is fine for poli sci since it states any major.

The blurb about switching to a type 2, is boilerplate. They are informing you that if he decides to switch to a school that does not accept IS rates, he will need to go to a 3 yr 2. The technical part is there from the standpoint that almost every college has non-tech majors, but not every college (LAC) have approved technical majors. Plus, not every college accepts ROTC scholarships, so they want to make sure you line up the major and the college.

This sounds like what they did yrs ago for our DS when he was applying for the scholarship. You pulled down the tab for the college, and than for the intended major. This way before you even applied you knew if your major and college was on their approval list.

It just appears that they are doing this procedure now, or maybe they are reminding the recipients that if they want to change here are the schools.

It has been yrs since we went through the process, but I do recall that some majors although sound technical are not classified by AFROTC as a tech major. I can recall a poster here who applied for a certain major, can't recall the exact wording, but it was like bio chemistry, and when they went off to the college they actually took a major that was classified by them as bio and they were told that they either changed their major to an approved tech or the scholarship would be pulled. I believe this is also true for some majors that are computers.

Point is make sure that the major matches up word for word because just one word change and it can move you from the tech to the non-tech pile.

As packer stated congrats you got one of those rare non-tech scholarships, only about 20% overall get that opportunity. I wouldn't worry at all, like I said earlier you can easily gain approval for non-tech to tech, it is just you notifying them of the new major, and them signing off. Tech to non-tech is not easy because like the Navy they want the majority of their recipients to be technical grads.

One thing to remember for the future, tech majors will be given an edge for their cgpa when it comes to the SFT compared to a non-tech major. Do not rest on your laurels and believe although a 2.8 is the min for the scholarship it will be enough for selection as a non-tech. Non-techs need @ 3.2/3.3 to be competitive for selection. 3.0 is traditionally the marker for techs.

CONGRATS, now go off and enjoy the rest of your sr yr. Remember to bubble wrap yourself, because you don't want to get injured and have to go through DoDMERB again!
