It would appear that you were selected as a non-tech, understand non-techs can go tech, thus any major. Tech majors must go tech, if they want non-tech they need to get approval.
Our DS is govt, class of 12, back in his day you had to declare your intended major, thus the letter stated Type and than non-tech and than the major.

Yes, since you are going IS it will be the same as a type 1 because they will cover the IS tuition.

The blurb about switching to a type 2, is boilerplate. They are informing you that if he decides to switch to a school that does not accept IS rates, he will need to go to a 3 yr 2. The technical part is there from the standpoint that almost every college has non-tech majors, but not every college (LAC) have approved technical majors. Plus, not every college accepts ROTC scholarships, so they want to make sure you line up the major and the college.
This sounds like what they did yrs ago for our DS when he was applying for the scholarship. You pulled down the tab for the college, and than for the intended major. This way before you even applied you knew if your major and college was on their approval list.
It just appears that they are doing this procedure now, or maybe they are reminding the recipients that if they want to change here are the schools.
It has been yrs since we went through the process, but I do recall that some majors although sound technical are not classified by AFROTC as a tech major. I can recall a poster here who applied for a certain major, can't recall the exact wording, but it was like bio chemistry, and when they went off to the college they actually took a major that was classified by them as bio and they were told that they either changed their major to an approved tech or the scholarship would be pulled. I believe this is also true for some majors that are computers.
Point is make sure that the major matches up word for word because just one word change and it can move you from the tech to the non-tech pile.
As packer stated congrats you got one of those rare non-tech scholarships, only about 20% overall get that opportunity. I wouldn't worry at all, like I said earlier you can easily gain approval for non-tech to tech, it is just you notifying them of the new major, and them signing off. Tech to non-tech is not easy because like the Navy they want the majority of their recipients to be technical grads.
One thing to remember for the future, tech majors will be given an edge for their cgpa when it comes to the SFT compared to a non-tech major. Do not rest on your laurels and believe although a 2.8 is the min for the scholarship it will be enough for selection as a non-tech. Non-techs need @ 3.2/3.3 to be competitive for selection. 3.0 is traditionally the marker for techs.
CONGRATS, now go off and enjoy the rest of your sr yr. Remember to bubble wrap yourself, because you don't want to get injured and have to go through DoDMERB again!
I found out today I was awarded a 4 year type 7 scholarship with any major preference. I have until January 6th to reply, but I am also looking at an appointment to a military academy... It is my understanding that one should always accept a scholarship, but how do I list school choices if admissions decisions are not 100% complete?
