Hello all,

I've been lurking around this time quite of bit now and thought i would join.
I'm a sophomore electrical engineering major in AFROTC. Last year, i've had some trouble adjusting to college and had some problems with grades. with my third semester coming to a close, i've gotten a cumulative gpa of 2.6, which i am not very proud of.

So, here is my question, what are my chances going to FT this year? some considerations are:
-94 on my PFA
-24 on my ACT
-involved within the detachment
-bilingual (korean), which i dont think the AF is interested in

thank you for the replies..

I'm sure PIMA will chime in soon.

From what I've read of her posts, you could be looking at an uphill climb for FT. Work on getting as high as you can on your PFT and finish the year strong in academics.

When you say finish the year strong in academics, do you mean spring of 2012? from what i know, i don't think the board will be taking spring of 2012 grades into account.

I'm probably a little out of my lane, but what is your detachment telling you your chances are. I don't think anyone on the board has the information needed to give you any advice of any worth. And if anyone tells you your chances aren't good, what do you think you are going to do?
Just asking.

My detachment is saying i still have a chance, theres couple of other cadets in my class who are not tech majors but have a slightly higher gpa than i do. so i was told by my cadre that 2.6 tech is better than a 2.8 non tech major. still not the best grade but i guess i still have a chance.

to answer your question, if i do not get a spot for the FT, ill definitely be doing my best to get my gpa up and make it to the next selection..

Foebox,

1. You are correct fall grades for soph yr are where they cut off since the board will meet in early Feb.

2. SFT is a national board, and nobody here knows the % they will accept this yr., so unfortunately we can't help you there.

3. When you talked to your CC for the end of semester review, typically they will tell you how you ranked out overall...top 10, 20, 30%, etc.

Now you should be able from there to get a gist of where you stand with one follow up question.

What was the % of C200's last yr that went to SFT from your det? What was their avg gpa?

If they say 35% went and you are top 50% you have an uphill battle. If they 55% and you are top 20% you should feel more comfortable.

The gpa issue has it's own variants besides tech v non-tech. The school is also going to matter to them. The board is going to acknowledge the rigor at MIT is harder than University of Missouri.

The importance of the ranking from your Commander is a big deal since 50% of the WCS for SFT is their rec.

You may or may not get selected, you may get rolled over to a 250. The real issue I see is you still need to pull those grades and PFA up because at the end of your jr. yr if you go to SFT, you will be fighting for your AFSC, and both of these issues will be part of your OML. The lower your OML is the harder it will be to fight for a competitive career field.

OBTW SFT ranking is a part of that OML, so when you go bust your hump to graduate DG!

FWIW, you are not allowed to decide to stay and do better next yr so you can go at that time if you do not get selected. They will decide to enroll you as a 250, this is why you see many jump over to AROTC after C200 yr, because AFROTC dis-enrolled them from the program. This is why many cadets start to panic at this time.

Again, you will be able to get a quick guess of your chances on that by looking at how many 250's are in your unit compared to how many were 200's now 300's, and how many 200's left after not being selected.

AFROTC has changed FT selection criteria

My daughter is currently doing her due diligence in trying to decide whether to take the AFROTC Type 7 or convert it to the Type 2, 3-Year scholarship.

She spoke to a detachment commander this week, very kind on his part since it is a vacation week. As posted on this forum, he let her know the percentage of tech majors selected for field training is higher than for non-tech majors -- 80%/20%.

He did indicate a recent change: 75% of the selection process is now based on GPA, ACT/SAT scores and physical fitness with only 25% detachment recommendation. You certainly still need the detachment recommendation, but it used to weigh in at about 50% of the decision. (It seems like this is an attempt to make the selection a bit more objective versus subjective.)

Ariel, on another forum they have said the same thing too, but over there the cadets are saying it is 35% for CC recs for C200s.

The differentiation may come from AFROTC doing the change in a tier system, and this yr it will go to 35% for 14's, and next yr for 15's it will be 25%. Supposition.

Either way it appears that the formula is changing.

If I recall correctly for 2012 grads, the CC rec is 35%. The CC will score them 2X in AFROTC. SFT and AFSC.

It makes sense that they bring those recs to the same weights.

Just an opinion, but I did get why the 50% existed for SFT. Many kids in college have an adjustment issue as freshman, and for SFT the selection only includes up to their fall soph yr gpa. One semester, such as 1st semester freshman can really ding them. The only way to off balance that ding would be from the CC.

It is not uncommon for changes. For example, 2012 grads took the AFOQT in their freshman yr (@ Oct), but now they have pushed it back to soph/jr yr and will use SAT/ACT scores for determination for SFT.

Another reason for 2016 candidates to understand that their SAT/ACT scores will not only be a factor for scholarships, but also for SFT.

Thanks for the responses

Thanks everyone,

I got all there is to know. I talked to my detachment and my Captain told me:

1. Since I'm an EE , Tech majors have a dominant advantage over non techs. (he also told me that AF is looking for tech majors more than ever)

2. My PT score is good, I have a slight higher det ranking, but not at the top.

3. Since I'm 100 percent Korean, my diversity could have a slight advantage (not so concrete).

4. So basically, I'm kind of in that "bubble"

I'll update you guys on whether I do get an EA around march.
