Hello everyone, despite having visited CGA website and read forums, I still have some unanswered questions to which I was unable to find answers.

1. How are the weeks during the swab summer divided? what do you do in the first week , in the second and etc.

2. In the WP as far as I know , you have some mandatory athletics and military classes(boxing, military movement) , what about CGA?

3. Other than classes, what type of military training can be accessed during the academic year?

4. Is there a shooting range? if yes, what type of arms are there and how can a cadet access the range?

5.Are there any combative classes? MMA or other ?

6.I have already asked this in the WP forum, but I do not know if this applies to all academies. How competitive is it to get involved in certain sports, for example, I would like to get involved in wrestling , is it possible without having any prior experience of this sport? I am not speaking about competing in a state championship or something , maybe just inside academy?

Thanks

1. Seven weeks, the six are divided. One week on USCGC EAGLE.

2. Yes, the same.

3. There are various mandatory training events each year. The Coast Guard is also very good to cadets, and if you reach out to a unit, you are often able to train with them on your off time (provided it doesn't interfere with their operations). With such a small service, I've found that to be true everywhere I've gone.

4. Yes. Don't know the current condition of the range. It's indoor. Not the greatest range in the world, but not horrible. Some large calibers aren't allowed. There aren't weapons for you to just go down and have fun though. There is a gun locker, working through CGA's GMs you can arrange to have your firearm stored there... or at least you could when I went to CGA. It's not easy to get on the range if you aren't on the rifle or pistol teams... those teams occupy the space, as well as local units and CGA personnel having to qualify on pistols or rifles.

5. Yes. You are required to take some defensive classes, and clubs also exist. I also participated in a slightly "illegal" fight/boxing club during summer school until I had a very good concussion (don't fight guys with a 6 inch reach on you).

6. There are less teams at CGA than a large D1 school like West Point. That said, it's a smaller school and I found... if you wanted to do it, you usually could to some level. If you don't make the varsity team, there maybe a JV team, club team or intra-company (IC.... like intramural) team for you to play on. I played JV soccer for my first two years, indoor track/field, b-side club hockey, lacrosse a large number of ICs. ICs get pretty heated, you will find there are companies that your company just doesn't get along with. If you want to do it at CGA, the only thing holding you back will be yourself (although some sports are harder to get on than others).

LITS gave you the overview, but I can answer a few more specifically.

1. Week one you get yelled at. After that, weeks 2-5 are about being yelled at. And then week six finishes with some yelling. At some point there will be some sailing on the Barque Eagle.

2. Principles of Fitness, Swimming, Professional Rescuer, Golf, Racquetball, Tennis and Personal Defense are all required courses for graduation.

3. In addition to the summer training, 0700 to 0800 and 1900-2000 most weekdays is reserved for military training periods, as well as 0800-1200 on Saturdays. Training can vary from a 45 minute presentation on Coast Guard Intelligence to four hours at the airport getting familiar with Coast Guard and National Guard aviation. Not to mention Naut Sci classes, which will start out with paper charting and lead up to conning T-Boats and working in the simulator.

4. 2 indoor ranges. Rifle and pistol. As LITS mentioned, not in the best shape; however, they are looking toward overhauling them. Weapons include SIG P229 DAK, M-16, and assorted non-CG weapons. Most cadets go to the range for one week (quals during second class summer) and never set foot in it again. Unless you are on the pistol, rifle, or combat arms team.

5. Personal Defense 1 is a self-defense class. You learn how to fall, escapes, and some basic strikes/kicks. PD2 is law enforcement combatives, including stuns, handcuffing, take-downs, etc. We also have a martial arts club.

6. LITS said it best. I can't offer too much more insight.
