I've received a number of messages asking about information concerning CGAS, so I thought I'd drop a thread in here. I'm the faculty adviser for CGAS students here at Marion Military Institute, so I'll be able to answer some of the program questions.

In general, the Coast Guard Academy Scholars program is the Coast Guard's version of NAPS and Army Prep. Students selected are provisionally accepted into the follow on class (in this case, 2017). Students who accept the scholarship enlist in the Coast Guard for a two year contract as an E-2, receiving all the pay and benefits. The Coast Guard Academy is responsible for tuition costs, while the student is responsible for all other expenses (room and board, uniforms, books, etc.) When the prep year is completed, the student is released from the enlistment contract unless there are extraordinary circumstances.

All CGAS Scholars take classes at either Marion Military Institute in Alabama, or Georgia Military College. They all take Math, English Composition, General Chemistry and General Physics, as well as physical fitness classes and Military Science (Army ROTC). They can also participate in athletics, arts, and other extracurricular activities that are offered by the schools. Coast Guard Admissions will assign the students to their schools, and then the students must complete the application requirements for their respective prep school.

CGAS Scholars will start out by attending indoctrination training at the Academy starting around the second week in July. There they will get basic training, similar to swab summer, by second class cadets who were also prep students. After completing their training, the scholars will be transported to their prep schools to start their military and academic training there. MMI usually has their students report on the second week of August, while GMC starts around a month later.

I know there are many more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them when I can. You can also go to the schools' web sites for contact information. MMI is at http://marionmilitary.edu and GMC's is http://www.gmc.cc.ga.us . In addition, there is a Facebook group that has been in place for several years at http://www.facebook.com/groups/14986475457/ (USCGA Scholars program).

Best of luck to all!

I have a couple of questions but first off I would like to say I think this is a fantastic opportunity!

My son has accepted a CGAS offer.
When will they receive instruction to apply for the school that they are being assigned to?

What do the scholars that are attending GMC do for the month between the end of the orientation program and the start of school at GMC?

Thanks.

It seems that CGAS offers have to be accepted before USCGA assigns scholars to schools. Is that right or will USCGA be making a decision soon?

Congratulations to your son! The school assignments won't be made until the class is formed. This will likely be in the April/May timeframe, near the end of the RA period.

Last year Scholars attending GMC were attached to CG Station New London until they reported to school. I would expect something similar next August.

Correct, the assignments won't be made until the CGAS class is selected. I would expect assignments in the April/May timeframe.

Interesting. I knew that CGA was getting rid of NMMI as a prep school. It looks like GMC is the replacement option.
