The Coast Guard Academy may move some programs out of New London if it cannot expand

New London proves again why it has been a disappointment since whaling ended. Riverside Park, known mostly for the number of needles that could be found there when I was a cadet, is just outside the gate near the old visitors center.

What has been said is the Coast Guard Academy could not afford to added additional security measures for an entirely new facility elsewhere. If the Coast Guard Academy expanded, the same security could be used.

If you've ever been to New London, you know there isn't much to be proud of there. Bank Street, while I was there, was a frequent location for problems, including an especially "exciting" execution-style killing.

Cadets FREQUENTLY preform community service for a group of people who couldn't give two $hits that the Coast Guard is there.

On top of all of this, think about the local work and jobs "created" to do the expansion.

But.... nope, New Londoners again show they see themselves more as a dying town than anything else.

I have traveled to New London on more than several occasions.
I have been to the Coast Guard Academy. It has a great campus.
However it is small and I could understand the need for more land.

LITS you are right about New London. The only thing New London has going for itself is the Coast Guard Academy. I would include the Sub base but that is in Groton. The park land they (New London) refused to sell is basically a dump by the water. It clearly is not used to its capacity. Why sell it to the Coast Guard
who would improve it when you can keep it and do nothing with it.

And all of the money the Corps pumps into the local economy. It's too bad. I wish we could just move the whole operation further south.

I vote for Florida. Now, it may get a "little" warm in the summer, but the winters are beautiful.

The CG will bait them, dangling the Museum and threatening to move the CGA to Norwich unless they finally give in with some land at Riverside.

All bluffs, IMHO. Moving OCS offsite might happen in the future, but the CGA isn't going anywhere. When the threats get a little more serious, New London will eventually buckle and do whatever they can to keep them.

I know CGA isn't moving anywhere. First Riverside vote I saw had the land going to CGA. I've been in favor of moving OCS back to Yorktown since I joined the Coast Guard. Let them be the big show in their own place.... right now they're just overshadowed.

Coast Guard OCS moved while I was a Gunner at TBS. About midway through that tour....so I am guessing 1998. Of course I have banged my grape once or twice since then too. :thumb:

TC Yorktown is a wonderful little place. My wife and I have been privaledged to stay in Cain Hall VIP quarters a couple of times and have been guest at the Port of York for Sunday brunch.

Could very easily be 1998.... I based my time frame off of a company officer we had at CGA who was in one of the last Yorktown classes....

Why did they move it in the first place? I know quite a few people who get annoyed by the early-morning racket that OCS makes.

We got annoyed by summer campers (I mean OCS) taking parking spots....

They moved it to save costs, have all officer training programs take place on the same grounds... OCS, LDC, CGA.....

Speaking of "cost saving" find a Commander or Captain and just mention "Governor's Island".... makes many senior officers turn red.

If anyone at the Coast Guard is wondering if New London residents really want the military academy in its midst, on Valentine's Day there should be no doubt.

New London City Center District is launching a "New London Loves USCG" mission to send "heart-felt sentiments of appreciation and affection to the U.S. Coast Guard."

The three-week campaign will begin Tuesday and culminate in a citywide USCG Appreciation Day on Valentine's Day at Union Station.

"We want the Coast Guard - and everyone who's witnessed the longevity and strength of New London's relationship with the Coast Guard - to know that the deeply held positive feelings that have endured for over 100 years are still here, still strong, and will remain strong for years to come,'' said Charlotte Hennegan, vice president of City Center District.

In November, city residents narrowly defeated a proposal to sell a portion of the adjacent Riverside Park to the academy for expansion. This week, Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio and Academy Superintendent Rear Adm. Sandra L. Stosz met for the first time to talk about how they might work together.

Special "I Love USCG" decals, arm bands and posters will be will be available and downtown businesses will have Valentine's Day card boxes so locals can write messages to Coast Guard Academy cadets, those on active duty and alumni.

A Facebook page has also been created and will offer Coast Guard trivia and daily updates on events.

City school students also will participate in a Valentine's Day card writing project, which will be delivered to the Coast Guard Foundation.

The New London Loves USCG campaign is sponsored by New London Main Street, the New London Division of the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut and New London Landmarks.

What a joke.
