"service starts at home" - and it matters!
The DS in the video w/ the Varsity jacket is the 4th in the line of 6 in our family (the one with the USNA nomination, acceptances to 6 universities, applicant for NROTC and AROTC). And the DS in the blue jacket, receiving assistance to make it up the ice covered driveway after church yesterday, is the baby of the family and has Down syndrome. DS #5 also has Down syndrome (you can spot him at the very end of the video sitting on the porch swing watching the mission of the morning). POint is..."service starts at home" has been DS #4's way of life for always. And, of course, for DS #3 (and DD #2 - 1LT USMC and DS #1 - spec.ed teacher). But it was DS #3 who just called and said Captain M. called to tell him that he had been accepted to PLC!!!!
So that's more proof positive that serving others matters! #3 is the soph. at the univ. a few hrs. north of here who was a USNA nominee 2 Q'd for Class of 2014 (medical DQ - eyesight), so NROTC - Marine OPtion College Programmer at in state univ. fall 2010. Early fall 2011 recommended by CO for 2 1/2 year scholarship - Dec. 2011 received word that no 2 1/2's awarded this year, so required to disenroll from NROTC mid-Dec. so as to begin candidacy for PLC - CO recommended DS #3 to "fast track" ap. so as to have him go before January 3 Review Board. Mission accomplished and today
The following is an excerpt from one of the 5 letters of recommendation required for PLC ap: "He excels in everything he does, but what impresses me most is that, without exception, he excels for the good of his team, school, family, church, and community - not himself. J. consistently displays the strength of character, determination, patience, quiet professionalism and sensitivity that I demand in my subordinate leaders. ...I'd fight to have J. on my team today!"" signed Colonel XXX, US Army, Special Operations Command, Washington Office. Being part of a team, a family, a platoon - serving others before self...it matters!!! from a little brother with special needs on an icy Ohio driveway to a Special Operations Colonel at the Pentagon!!!
