Recieved notification of full qualification and placement for NWL. not idea, but definitely good news.

I am taking my SAT this saturday and am slated to win a few more awards here soon. If I send in my scores and more achievements, could it be possible to be accepted ? or is it nothing until "may 15th" like on the NWL sheet.

Regardless of the date, if you can raise your position on the NWL, you should. Don't know what they'll allow you to add at this point, but worse that can happen is they say No.

2016 candidates can continue to update their file until the application deadline which is 28 FEB.

I don't understand how the NWL truly works. Is it for candidates who have been rejected and are waiting to fill in spots, or are they any sort of nominated candidate that did not receive the principle nomination from their respective counties?

In short, how I understand the NWL: It is a pool of candidates that did not receive the vacancy spot of their MOC. These candidates must be triple qualified to fall into the NWL pool. This pool will eventually contain approximately 1700 candidates who will be ranked 1 to 1700 by their WCS (whole candidate score). West Point will award (approximately) the top 450 candidates an appointment to the academy. So, being placed on the NWL means that you are still in the game! And as described in various other threads, candidates can continually better their WCS until the Feb 28th deadline.

Thanks for the info. So after Feb.28, all the WCS will be in order and the academy will decide what "450" it wants which will take until March 15?

I am taking my SAT again (made an 1850 last time) on saturday, so the scores should be back in time. Apparently that was my "downfall" to not getting the vacancy because I have triple the activites and awards of the other. Really wish my congressman would've done the vacancy instead of leave it up to WP.

Off to finish other college apps!

They will probably take a few from the NWL starting now. However, after Feb 28 these appointments will come at a much higher rate. As people who have offers decline the offer (they have until 1 May to accept or decline) more people will be given offers from the NWL. Appointments from this list normally will be almost completed by early May. However, last year a handfull were given in late May and early June.

I think this is a good summary. I would just add, that for this year, having a plan B is going to be more important than in the last few years. I had a very good conversation with one of the regional team leads in the admissions office (not sure what they are called at this forum), and his statement regarding the NWL was this:

"...the class of 2016 will be smaller than the last few years, for example the class of 2014 came in with 1350 + cadets, while the class of 2016 will come in with approx. 1150. That 200 cadet difference will mostly come out of the applicants on the NWL."

I don't think that will be a surpise to many, BUT I wanted to share that with everyone because it means that you need to have a plan B. If you are on the NWL, that means you are 3Q'd for admittance into one of the best institutions we have in the U.S., and therefore, are also qualified for many other things. Don't get caught hoping for the WP acceptance, without looking into other ways of accomplishing your goals!

Just out of curiosity do most USMA applicants also allpy for AROTC scholarships, is this something that is encouraged as a Plan B.

My son was encouraged to apply ROTC also and I would guess that a fairly high percentage do apply for AROTC but I know of a couple of USMA applicants this year that did not apply for AROTC. For one it was WP or nothing and the other was so sure he would get into WP that he didn't bother to apply AROTC.

In fact, when interviewing candidates for West Point, one of our guidelines is to encourage the candidate to apply for AROTC scholarships.
I don't know how many WP applicants also apply for AROTC scholarships, but I would say that it would be a fair amount. After all - the end goal is to be an Army officer. Red flags are raised if a candidate says they want to go to WP but have no desire to enroll in AROTC. We then question whether being an Army officer is the real goal.

For the other was so sure he would get into WP that he didn't bother to apply AROTC.
Oh my, that is cavalier, bordering on reckless! I don't think applicants, being young, appreciate how often in life "sure things"... aren't.

He has already learned it did not work out for him. Tough lesson.

Hi, do we still figure that about 1700 will be on nwl and now ONLY about 250 will be appointed off this list? Does anyone know how to find out how many on the 1700 has a LOA? I guess if you don't have one, you are in a worse situation.

Only about 100 candidates came from the NWL into last year's class.

Hi thank you for responding, I am a bit confused to hear only 100 got in. I thought the MOC is 550 and service related is 350, that leaves about 350 that came from the NWL last year...no?

Please let me know where you got this info so I can investigate. Do you know if all of them had LOA?

Thanks again.
