A few months ago I received a LOA from West Point. Just recently I received a nomination, and today I got my official acceptance letter in the mail! A small postcard came with the letter. The postcard concerns accepting my appt to West Point, but there is no deadline for sending it in and no information about it in the letter either. I am wondering if sending this in obligates me in any way, or if it is just preliminary and I will receive a packet later on with an acceptance deadline and such? It's not that I am unsure of my ability to succeed at WP, it's just I don't know for sure right now what will happen in the next few months with my other applications (other service academies and ROTC) and I haven't fully decided on my top preference. That postcard is very important.
If you check the little line that says "I accept my appointment" (in whatever wording) and return it to West Point, then you have officially accepted your appointment (and are obligated to attend West Point) and it will be very, very difficult to take it back should you change your mind.
Before sending it in, make sure that this is what you really want to do. On the flip side, don't wait until a week before R-Day (that's an exaggeration; you know what I mean) to send it in though. I'd say send it in as soon as possible, but no later than around two months prior to your report date.
Also, the same acceptance card can be signed online via your candidate portal (as soon as it updates with your appointment), so you can simply sign the card electronically and be done with it.
Whichever route you decide to take, be sure that it's what you really want to do.
Not true. There are a number of people who accept their appointment, then never bother to report for R-day. There is no legal commitment you make when you accept the appointment. If you decide that WP is not for you after you accept, call WP up and let them know.
You can always call WP to find out the deadline.

Oops...my bad on that one.
At the same time though, recklessly accepting an appointment and not showing up is a very irresponsible thing to do, especially considering that there are thousands of others who would love to have the spot that has now gone unfilled.
I am still crossing my fingers because I very worried since I didn't meet up with the SAt or ACT score requirement, however I met up with everything. Does anyone have an idea what that will do? I am hoping I can be given the chance to attend the preparatory school. I'm all for this academy and hardly any Samoan kid makes it because of its high standards and its very competitive.
