Sad day for PSU.

I have to admit when he did the interview last week with WaPo I said to Bullet I think this is his way of insuring he got out his last thoughts.

My opinion of that piece was he did what he always did, placed his 1st love over his own desires...not football, but PSU.

He fell on the sword in some ways in that article in my opinion to protect PSU. He showed to his last days of life his love, dedication and belief in that school.

My sympathies to his family, to the school, to the players and the students. May time heal the wounds.

Sad day for PSU, sadder for the Paterno family.

My brother in law taught for years at PSU and I spent a lot of time with him on campus. Joe Pa was revered on campus. It bears your heart to see him die under this stinking cloud of criminal misconduct by someone else. Hindsight is always 20/20.

tpg,

You are correct they donated $100,000 dollars about 3 weeks ago. Both he and Mrs. Paterno also provided the money for the entire cost the Catholic Student Faith Center on Park Avenue. My son who is a senior there, asked how could they do this to a man who donated money to the school and all he wanted to do was coach football. My son has never attended a single game, he feels there is no time for sports at college. I told what happened here was business. I think there are two stories running side by side here one about Sandusky Scandal then there the Paterno Story. I know several members of the BOT, who have told me that not everyone voted to fire him. They had to tell the story in that manner. I think Dr. Erickson and the BOT have realized that mistakes were made here and now they don't know what do do.

Although, JoePa should have disclosed the information regarding Sandusky and child abuse, I still think that he was a highly respected, revered individual that did a lot for the school. I'm glad to see that he continues to be remembered for the good he did and not the mistake he made.

I'm sorry to say it but he stained his own legacy by putting PSU football (and by association PSU) above his moral obligation to those children. All the money he donated will be dwarfed by the mountains of cash the citizens of PA will be paying out as a result of Sandusky. And JoePa's name will be forever associated.

There is no evidence to support this statement. Not to get into a full blown argument but this makes me wonder how much you have read and absorbed.
Finally, try not to hate on a dead man until he is buried. Keep it classy.

JoePa proved on Sat night - one should not to believe everything you read in the media about Paterno.

I was stating my opinion that what he did or didn't do makes little difference; for those folks not in Happy Valley, his memory will be forever tied to Sandusky. If I say "Richard Nixon" is your first thought of him ending the Viet Nam War, opening relations with China, establishing the EPA? Or does Watergate spring to mind?

Sandusky still had full access to the facilities, including the weight rooms and showers, as recently as last November.

Despite Paterno knowing about this molester, he did nothing to keep him away.

In the testimony, Paterno said he "knew inappropriate action was taken by Jerry Sandusky with a youngster" after a meeting with then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary, who allegedly saw Sandusky sexually abusing a boy in a locker room shower the previous night, but did not inform police and waited at least a day to inform his boss, athletic director Tim Curley, because he "didn't want to interfere with their weekends."

Sandusky, who played and coached under Paterno for more than 30 years prior to his retirement in 1999, remained a regular on Penn State's campus until his arrest on a multitude of sexual abuse charges last month.

Paterno's legacy is stained forever. Stop holding him up as some sort of person to be admired, he was nothing but a football coach who allowed a known child molester to hang around.

History will not be kind to him.

The entire JoePa series of events has had me thinking a lot about this song recently....

If you can get over the bad 80's outfits, I think it's apropos.

You clearly have no idea about the situation you are talking about. Please stop spouting your ignorance.

I had no idea that 80's outfits were considered "bad" -- perhaps I should give serious thought to upgrading my wardrobe!

I wish you had added one more comma in your next to last sentence that would have included "the victims."

When it was time for Paterno to use the power that he had accrued -- when he became aware that for years, children allegedly were being molested under the ceiling of the football monument he had built -- he did not lead. He passed the information on. He did not care enough or do enough or use enough of his power or show enough of his leadership to be worthy of that monument. That is why he will be judged so harshly. His wife, Sue, told The Washington Post: "If someone touched my child, there wouldn't be a trial. I would have killed them. That would be my attitude, because you have destroyed someone for life."

Paterno did not commit the crime, nor was he the only player in what amounted to a colossal institutional failure. But he did not live up to what was expected of someone who had meant so much and controlled so much of what took place at his school. He failed in the one test that mattered the very most.

Joe Paterno: Hard lessons, bitter truths

You are simply wrong when you say that Joe allowed a "known child molester to hang around for years". Jerry was retired when McQueary told Joe that he saw Jerry in the shower with a 16 year old boy. Joe was not Jerry's boss, and hadn't talked to him since 98. Joe set up the meeting with the head of campus police. What more did you want Joe to do? He didn't witness anything. The investigation was out of his hands.

As Phil Knight said the other day, "There is a villain in this tragedy that lies in that investigation, not in Joe Paterno’s response to it.”

Obviously everything is clear in hindsight. But trust me, Jerry fooled EVERYBODY. I'm tired of people saying that Joe knew about a serial child molester and didn't do anything about it because he cared more about football. That is simply not true.

Try again. Paterno knew in 1998, and yet Sandusky continued to have access to the football team facilities (and showers) for years after.

Paterno was an enabler, he failed miserably in protecting those children, and to lift him up as some sort of role model is disgusting. He coached foootball, and failed at protecting children.

Is there any rational human being that doesn’t think that the single most powerful man in Happy Valley, if not that part of Pennsylvania, did not know what heinous allegations were made against the incredibly popular Sandusky beginning as early as 1998?

Sandusky told University police in addition to a social worker that he "showered with young boys" (meaning several) and that he "hugged them" in the shower. Is there any possible way that information be it rumor or not didn’t get back to the president, athletic director, Joe Paterno and Board of Trustee members at Penn State?

When Sandusky departed the coaching staff in 1999, it looks like Penn State Football, Joe Paterno, the President, the AD, etc. exhaled a sigh of relief as Sandusky appeared to be purged from their midst.

Unfortunately, giving him emeritus status only increased his visibility. His unfettered access to young boys combined with unlimited and unquestioned access to any Penn State facility he wanted would go rampantly unchecked for the next decade under the watchful eye of, well, no one.

Apparently wasting no time after he departed the football program, two additional janitors reported seeing Sandusky again in the showers with a young boy in 1999, and it was reported in the custodial department, even up to a supervisory level, yet still nothing was done by anyone to stop this alleged predator. Is it possible that a janitor or supervisor told a football coach, the AD or a secretary that a former football coach was engaged in shenanigans in the football shower room with a pre-teen? Is there a chance this incident was not known by the Penn State power brokers, including Coach Paterno?

The now famous "shower gate" in 2002 in which then graduate assistant football coach McQueary reported seeing Sandusky raping a child in the football showers certainly had to make it up the food chain to the highest levels including Joe Paterno, the AD and the President, among others. Grand Jury testimony of Joe Paterno and McQueary both indicate that the Penn State brass was told about this in graphic and disturbing detail.

Joe Paterno, McQueary, Bill Curley, President Graham Spanier and Vice President Schultz all had the opportunity to go to the real police. Do you find it odd that not one person did?

Showergate: Paterno, Penn State Football, Sandusky and Why They All Knew

Let me add that I, like most people on this board I assume, understand that there is a huge difference between legal responsibility and moral responsibility.

But Joe simply did NOT know. He was one of the most humble people on earth, and he truly believed that he was doing the right thing when he passed the info on to people who knew what to do.

LOL. quoting the Bleacher Report. You know what that is right? Get some facts before you assume that Joe "must have" known in 98.

Jerry had emeritus status with the university, so he had access to the facilities. No one thought anything of it because nobody knew!

...he truly believed that he was doing the right thing

And he failed miserably, enabling a known child rapist to continue molesting children.

Deify him if you wish, but his legacy is now a man who failed to protect those who needed the most protection.

Regardless of what you think.

Incorrect. I would like to know your source. Please don't quote some ESPN reporter who made it up.

This is an extremely complicated, tragic and disturbing case. There were failures all along the way for years and years. There is a lot of schleck written about this case, much of which is supposition and speculation. The Grand jury presentment as well as transcripts from the Curley/Schultz hearing. There also is some good investigative reporting. Beware of anything ESPN etc published about this case.

Here's the thing - Joe Paterno was fired as a knee jerk reaction by the BOT and encouraged by Gov Corbett.
Now the plot thickens -- Gov Corbett was the AG when this case came to him in the spring of 2008. From then until the arrest last fall - Sandusky was allowed to freely operate. No mention of the ongoing investigation was made until two short articles in the Patriot-News last March 31 and April 1. However, even the current PSU President Erikson claims not to know about these reports. Bottom line is - while under investigation by the State's AG office for over THREE years Sandusky roamed freely.

During this time Corbett was campaigning for Governor. He assigned ONE trooper to the investigation who broke it open when PSU finally released their police reports and the 1998 investigation was discovered. Shultz knew about this investigation but never volunteered the information. During this time Corbett told the boy's mother that he could not prosecute ONE case. He needed to find other cases. After Corbett became Gov., the case broke wide open and to deflect from his own incompetence as AG, Corbett then encourage the BOT to dump Paterno knowing it would create a media sensation. Corbett even has his own appointed State Police Commissioner make a statement of Paterno's lack of moral responsibility.

PA law - Paterno acted properly. Even if he had asked he would not have been informed of the progress of any investigation.
Lets say a school teacher suspects abuse. They are to make a report to their supervisor. Once that report is made - the teacher is out of the picture. They are told nothing about any investigation and cannot even ask. This is how the process and law works in PA.

usna14 - folks who have their mind made up are not interested in the truth. They refuse to wait for it. They enjoy the sensationalistic speculation.
