Altus has nothing on the greater (haha) Polk area!

Kirtland is a sweet locale, though.

Why not Minot?

"Freezin's the reason...but the ice is nice, and...it's cold I'm told..."

This can go ON AND ON AND ON AND ON...

Said the guy that lived 201 miles East on HWY 2 for 6 years...
(and actually liked it! )

Baumholder Germany.... STILL gives me the shivers 30 year later...

Twas no place for man or beast - or a stray USAF E4...

Best

As someone who has been at almost all of the locales mentioned, I will emphatically agree the Ft Polk IS the armpit of military locations within the US.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, compares to spending 5 months at Kwang Ju AB, Korea, however. When you actually say "We're going to Kunsan this weekend!" with enthusiasm and excitement, you know you're staying in a place where you can actually smell the brimstone (or the Bin-Ju ditch, in this case)....

I knew someone would bring it up.....

I was at Minot as a missileer.

The OG Deputy CC said at one pre-departure briefing before alert: "The temps are going to be about -20 tomorrow when you guys head back (if we can send a crew to relieve you). Make sure you drive slow on the way home. I mean, you don't need to hurry, you live in Minot for Christ's sake."

On two or three occasions, I drove over an hour (each way) to go to Bismarck because they had a Red Lobster. Sh#tty, frozen seafood was that much of a lure because it was different. Red Lobster is a highlight for the Minot airman.

Minot had three restaurants at the time. Chief among them was Applebee's (a lousy chain restaurant to begin with). Since 2003, when I left Minot in the rear view, I have never set foot in an Applebee's and I never will.

You mean the same al-Udeid we sent exhausted to for some short R&R from Iraq? Sounds rough...

I have no doubt that you had it worse than most of us on here when you were in Iraq.

Minot still sucks....

My cutter this summer pulled into GTMO...all I can say is that I'm glad that coastie's don't usually get stationed there.

"Short R&R from Iraq?"

Hmm....ya'll either lived up to the US Army credo of "let's treat our folks worse than the Navy enlisted" or you had a seriously wicked sense of humor.

"R&R" at "The Deid..." well...it's true that there were no mortars or rockets at "The Deid" like Iraq at times...

But...
