Few Questions

I have looked through the USMA website and this forum, but can't seem to find any answers to a few questions that I have.

I looked at some of the entering profiles of different classes, and I see that it shows the number of students accepted who have participated in a varsity sport. Below that, it says "Letter Winner." Can someone please tell me what a letter winner is?

Is community service a factor in being accepted into West Point? My school handbook says that a student must have a minimum of 50 community service hours to graduate. Would West Point prefer to accept students with a greater amount?

If an applicant isn't accepted into West Point, is he/she guaranteed a spot to West Point Prep school?

Letter winners are those who earned a varsity letter in their sport.

Yes, community service is a positive factor in admissions, but leadership in the realm of community service is more meaningful.

The Prep School is (with a few exceptions) for ethnic minorities, recruited athletes, and prior-service candidates. Joe Candidate who is not accepted is highly unlikely to go to the Prep School.

Scoutpilot is dead on. Yes, you need to have some community service. Don't worry about the academy's minimums, do as much as you can. Getting into an academy is hard work and requires a lot of effort. If you can't handle having high school academics plus a lot of EC's after school, I doubt an academy is where you'll fit in. And don't pay much attention to prep school chances. All you have to do is apply to te academy, if they want you in the prep school, they'll offer it to you. But it is a far cry from being guaranteed to any applicant.

Keep utilizing these forums as you seek admissions, they have been a huge boon to me and everyone I've spoke to on here, and good luck!
