Waiver Deadline is April 15

My DS accepted his appointment to USMA on December 6, dislocated his shoulder on December 17 (in a wrestling tournament), had arthroscopic surgery to repair shoulder on January 9, was DQ'd by DoDMERB on January 25.

We've been told by USMA that a waiver will have to be approved by April 15 or DS won't be able to report for R-Day on July 2. In order for waiver to be granted, USMA wants a release to full, unrestricted activities from doctor. Here's the issue: DS's doctor says DS won't be ready for full release by April 15 but WILL be ready for full release by the end of June (before R-Day). Does anyone know if that April 15 date is flexible at all? How about a having a "release" from doctor by April 15 that releases DS by June 30?

If I had know that I should have wrapped DS in bubble wrap and put him in a corner until he reported on R-Day, I would have done it. He's a 4-year varsity wrestler and captain of the team - what else was he supposed to do but wrestle? So dissapointed. Just trying to work through the process and would like some clarification/further information about the deadline date.

Any help would be appreciated!

So timely

My son just broke his collar bone wrestling tonight. Same thing captain, ranked 4th in state. X rays tomorrow... Hope no surgery. Accepted his appointment 2 weeks ago. Can collar bones heal in 2 months. I guess we will be making calls tomorrow.

Jbrower our DS's were at SLS together. You should email the RC and see if they can give you more insight into that time frame. I always understood you needed to be ready to go on R day.

I've been in constant contact with RC and that's where the April 15 date came from. DS has been told by RC and Field Force rep to be ready to execute Plan B as the waiver is unlikely. DS is handling this much better than I am. I haven't received any info from RC as to whether the waiver review has even begun yet.

I hope our DSs will be at Beast together as members of the Class of 2016. My DS assures me he will be at USMA "one way or the other". He's already planning to reapply for 2017 if necessary. He's so much more "grown up" than I am! I'm still throwing temper tantrums and crying on the floor like a toddler:smile:

I'm so sorry about your DS's injury. It very sad that our boys won't get to finish our their senior year wrestling season. Our State tournament is this weekend. I can't believe my DS won't be on the mat doing his "thing". Wrestling has been a part of our lives since he was in 5th grade. I miss it already.

Make your calls to USMA and DoDMERB as quickly as possible. The process is long and you don't want to waste any time. Start gathering all records and have copies ready to send to DoDMERB. Be patient.

Sent you PM.

I'm thrilled to report that DS's waiver has been approved for USMA Class of 2017! Couple that with the LOA he has in hand and he's 2 steps closer to an appointment (again) to USMA! His MOC nomination interview is next week. What a wild ride this has been. I so appreciate all the effort that has been made on DS's behalf to get him to this point. I know in my heart that the struggle over the last year will make him a better cadet and officer. The only downside here: he's going to miss his buddies in the Corps at Texas A & M... a great group of dedicated young people.

Patience and perseverance win again!
