Can the Coast Guard Academy rescind your admission to the Prep School?

I recently got accepted into the Coast Guard Academy Scholars Program. I currently have a D in my Calculus AP class, but I have had a history of not doing well in math. Would the CGA revoke my acceptance into the Prep School, and if not, what should I do about it?

I would recommend speaking with LT Chris Culpepper, the CGAS Program Coordinator, about this. I know they request an updated transcript from all CGAS appointees, but I think it's primarily used for school placement and course selection versus rescinding appointment offers.
 
As my finals for semester 1 of my senior yearends, these are the grades I ultimately received:

Wind ensemble: A
Multicultural Literature: C
Economics: C
Biotechnology: C
Calculus AP: F

I am truly disappointed with the way my finals turned out. If I show improvement with my second semester report card, will they ignore the first semester? I didn't come this far to rescinded from the Scholars Program especialky since USCGA is the only school I applied to. I'm planning to work hard next semester by getting a 4.0. Are there any insights to my situation?

Ok so what was the magic that got you into CGA scholars? sports? SAT scores, Community service? leadership experience? Under-represented minority? Is there a glimmer of hope for us out here?

I got decent grades. Sophomore and Junior year I averaged a 3.5 weighted. My total academic record is 3.0 unweighted and 3.2 weighted. My SAT scores were not that great... CR:520 WR:550 MATH:640. I was not the strongest at my academics, but my leadership played an immense role into my acceptance into the CGA Scholars Program.

-Eagle Scout (Senior Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, and Patrol Leader)
-(even though I didn't list this in my application) Order of the Arrow (National Honor Society for Boy Scouts)
-United States Naval Sea Cadets (Leading Petty Officer, Assistant Leading Petty Officer, and Petty Officer 3rd class)
-Marching band and wind ensemble section leader for the tuba section
-Swim team captain of my school for two years (I didn't quite make the Coast Guard Academy swim team times...)
-Volunteered at the US Navy recruiting office regularly
-Was a camp counselor at a Boy Scout camp for 4 weeks

I also got recommendations from my commanding officer of my Sea Cadet Unit (he's a Lieutenant Commander in the Coast Guard and USPHS), Coast Guard Lieutenant (he's in charge of engineering down in Long Beach, CA), my scoutmaster, and from a person from the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

I've also been on patrols with the Coast Guard on the 87 foot cutters.

Plus, I attended AIM and I believe that the cadre that I were with wrote a good report about me, and plus our division basically won the engineering competition. Also, we were the honor company for week 1.

I don't know if this really matters, but I'm Asian and can speak both Japanese and Korean fluently.

So to sum it up, I believe that my extra curricular activities really demonstrated my leadership and time management. When the United States Coast Guard Academy says appointments are holistic, they really mean it. I am not as smart as Einstein or as athletic as Kobe Bryant, but they looked at me as a whole.

Well, since I messed up this semester very badly, I need to make it up next semester, and hopefully they will look past it because I have never done this horribly in my life. :redface:
 
Wow! impressive. I live in the mountains in a very rural area and far away from the ocean. Its really hard to "do" a lot on a daily basis since we live so far away from everything. My test scores are like yours but my classes and grades are pretty good. I go to a small private prep school that is 10x more demanding than the work I was doing at the public high school I attended my freshman and sophomore year. I also swim but not that fast. I have been on teams since I was 5. I just enjoy it. One year I took a break and joined a synchronized swim team. That was a lot of fun but practice and meets were too far for my mom to keep dragging 3 little brothers around. OK now that I've gone way off topic, I will stop. Congrats. I'm sure you will do just fine. CGA is the only service academy I applied to. My plan B has already accepted me so I do have a fall back. Now its just time to sit back and wait.:wink:

Unlikely, as your lack of calculus experience is probably the reason you are going to prep school.

And if you continue to fail it (or other classes) in prep school?

Consider it (losing the appointment to the USCGA) a virtual certainty.

I'm sure this is hard to hear, but Luigi is being straight with you. Academics is a big part of you success at the Academy and in getting your choice of assignments.

You might want to consider an after school tutoring program. Some local community college professors do math tutoring on the side and of course there are the national companies that offer after school/weekend tutoring. May be too late for your fall semester grades but it may make the difference between succeeding in prep-school or washing out. Hope the advice helps.
