I am planning on applying to CGA and I have already completed most of my AIM application. I have some questions on how to make myself more competitive. I play on varisity field hockey and am wondering if I should join either track and field or swimming for my junior year since CGA doesn't have a field hockey team. I am in the top 8% of my class, with a 3.98 weighted GPA and a nonweighted 3.88 GPA. I am a commissioner for the youth commission in my community, as well as a member of S-Club, Key Club, and Link Crew. I didn't very well on my ACT with a composite of 27, 28 in math, and 21 in English. Am I competitive without another sport? should I add a sport? And if yes which sport looks better on my application? Also on classes for next year...I have a block squedule which let's me double up on certain classes. I will have completed Calculus AB by next year but I can double up and take Cal. AB and BC. Should I? I can also take a second chemistry class. How much would taking extra math and science courses help me? I am already taking all the honors classes I can.

Does your school offer AP course, if yes you should sign up for those, simple honors classes do not carry the same weight.

Keep taking the ACT to try and get the English score up and it wouldn't hurt to get your Math up some too. The CGA has a heavy Math/Sceince Core.

Adding another sport your junior year is not a bad idea, track is always a good choice as well as swimming. Do the sport that will give you the best opportunity to make Varsity. Try and become Captain for at least one of the sports.

You look to be a member of several clubs and organizations, you should work to become a leader/president of a couple of the clubs.

The CGA looks not only at academics, they will look to see what your leadership qualities are, becoming a team captain and a president or other elected position in a couple clubs will help, These things will probably help you more then the added sport.

Good luck

It's a factor, but not a deciding factor.

Nowhere nearly as important as a high math SAT, AP Calculus mastery, or a varsity team sport captain.

I am an Eagle Scout with Palms how much does that help? Is it considered at the CGA?
Thanks

Eagle Scout is a very good EC and very noteworthy at all the service academies (as is the Gold Award for GS). Congratulations on your accomplishment.

Thanks for all the responses. I guess I should mention I do all of my community service through the clubs, so I have plenty of it. I have taken all available AP courses, except for US History. I am taking both calculus class(which are both AP) but I am trying to decide between AP Bio or AP Chem. Which looks better? I already took Bio 1 and Honors Chem. I just can't decicde between the two. Does the Academy prefer one over the other?

AP Chem will do you more good. You will take Chem at CGA as a swab but I don't know that you will ever take Bio at CGA.

Actually I am planning on majoring in MES, but I am not sure which area of specialization yet...

re: field hockey

My DD is currently a 4/c at CGA and played only field hockey in high school. (So you can be appointed with only one varsity sport, even if it's not offered at the Academy.) Once she got to the Academy, she decided to play rugby and loved it. She also considered lacrosse for the spring, but isn't going to have enough time to dedicate to it. Best of luck!
