At the appropriate time, you will be directed to the DoDMETS website where you will login using your SSN as your username and your last name as your password. You will then type in all of your information including your medical history and your location. At this point, I don't remember if you are required to call and schedule your appointments or if DoDMETS does that part for you. (Someone else can clarify.) Then your appointment dates will be set up in DoDMETS and when the time comes you will drive to and take your medical and eye exams. Afterwards, DoDMETS will send your test results to DoDMERB where the actual evaluation will be made. Then, (If your visit went the way mine did.) you will wait an annoyingly long time to find out if you are qualified, need a remedial, or need waiver. Assuming you are qualified, your SA(s) of choice will update your profile to show your DoDMERB status as "Qualified" and part 1/10 of your application will be complete! Note that it is possible to be disqualified at one academy and qualified at another, but that's a waiver issue and you'll cross that bridge if/when the time comes.

To answer your question regarding a regular doctor administering the exam, yes it can be done, but you will be responsible for all the expenses. I'm not sure how it all works, because I didn't use that method.

No, generally not...DODMERB contracts with docs/clinics all over the place to provide this service. In our case it was an occupational health clinic (for profit) for the doc part and a retail-type optometry office for the eye exam.

You will receive very detailed instructions about how to do this- it is important to follow them to the letter and to act quickly to get the initial exams done since any problems may take months to address.

My son's instructions came in July between his junior and senior years and we were able to get appointments the very next week.

Hope that helps!

You will receive a letter in the mail from Dodmerb, you will set up a Dodmet account. The letter will list the doctor's clinic you are to get the physical, it will also list the eye doctor for you eye exam. After you receive this letter you will have a required timeframe to make you appointments and notify Dodmet. You will be required to fill out the medical history form prior to the appointment, you then go to the appointments and the clinic will forward your results to Dodmerb. Then you wait.

Just wanted to clarify that you cannot use a private physician (unless under extreme circumstances/approval from DoDMERB) for the initial examinations.

Cheers,
Joe

I stand corrected. Here's what I have on my paperwork: (Quoted word for word.)

3. A third option, unless otherwise directed in this letter, is to have the remedial(s) completed by a private physician and/or test facility of your choice, at your own expense! The government WILL NOT pay nor reimburse you for this option! If you choose this option you will need to make the appointment yourself, and you will need to make arrangements for the results to be mailed to DoDMERB at the address listed in our letterhead. DoDMERB will not be responsible for obtaining the results from a private physician and/or test facility if you choose this option. TO REPEAT, THE GOVERNMENT WILL NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, PAY OR REIMBURSE YOU FOR THIS OPTION!

Only remedials may be handled by a private physician.
