Are the training schools ( airborne, northern warfare, etc.) open to any ROTC cadet? I know that it requires certain grades and physical test scores and such but can an Army rotc cadet apply to these schools or only if you go to a certain college? Also can you go after freshman year?

Cadets must be contracted to be eligible for summer training schools.

Freshman usually are not selected for summer training except for CULP. Some battalions may give contracted freshman a summer training spot but it is not common.

Each battalion gets a number of slots, the battalion will decide who goes, usually by a battalion OML.

Does anyone know when these slots are offered/announced? Will it be soon, or is it closer to the end of the spring semester?

I can only tell you how the selection was made at my son's school. He is now a MS4 so this was a couple years ago when he was a MS2. The Mst Sgt. called him into the office in mid Jan. and told him he was #1 and would have his choice of the school slots available, he had one week to decide. So back then his battalion gave them out in late Jan. I'm not sure when they will do it this year. Older son being a MS4 and younger being a MS1 neither is in the loop for the schools so I Haven't heard anything about when they gave out the school slots.

Ok, thanks for the info. Did they give your son a choice of dates of when to go in the summer, or was it a set date?

ARMY ROTC seems to get a lot of summer opportunities for sophmores. Junior's have LDAC. There are always exceptions to that. Don't worry if your DS or DD is not selected for summer opps there will always ample opportunites after they graduate. Their focus now should be doing their work, academically and with PT. The real focus and effort is getting themselves ready to lead. If they don't worry about that now it really wont matter later. Do now what you need to do and the badges and opportunities will come later.

The date was set.

I agree with NorwichDad, there are only a few slots given each battalion each year. This year it could be even less due to the decrease in training budgets. I have read the WestPoint is even getting fewer slots this year. Not every cadet will go to a summer training school, As NorwichDad said, there will be opportunities later, the focus should be on the basics.

Jecleppe is absolutely correct on fewer slots. The Army faces drastic budget cuts. They also know they need to get the next group to man the wall ready. The Army relies on the PMS at each school to send the best cadets they can as any opportunities arise. The costs, airfare and everything else with the training opps are significant.

Ok, I figured it was a long shot and wouldn't come into play. My son is SMP, so he has AT for Reserves in July, plus he's looking at taking a class this summer. I was trying to think how he'd squeeze in a training school if the offer came up, but it's probably not going to happen anyway (although he'd love it!)

Have your Ds talk to sgt and cadre. DS was encouraged to join National guard rather than reserves since the guard apparently will "excuse" a SMP cadet more readily if a school slot is offered. Just a thought....

Ask, you never know.

Best of luck to him, sounds like a great kid
