Ds just received type 7 AFROTC scholarship letter in the mail today. He was notified he was passed over on the first board in December so this was a pleasant surprise. He also received NROTC scholarship in November and now is just stalking the mailman for plan A... USNA and USAFA. Hoping more good news to follow and wishing all of you still waiting the best of luck! :thumb:

My Son plans on using his T7 at Auburn for Plan B if he doesn't get a BFE. He'll be disappointed of course, but it's two hours from home (just far enough), he's a huge Auburn fan, lots of his friends are going there, and he's been accepted in the Engineering and Honors Colleges so I suspect it won't be TOO much of an exile to Siberia...:rolleyes:

I just want him to be happy wherever he's at USAFA or Auburn.

Congrats, Crair70--our DS also had the "pass over" AFROTC letter from December,and got his AFROTC type7 award letter today! Totally unexpected. He also has 4 yr NROTC award to 1st choice school, but won't know if acceptance comes through until March. Has two noms (MOC & Senator) to USNA, so hopeful for that BFE for Plan A, as well. Fingers crossed - best of luck to all!
 
I too just received a letter from the AFROTC board telling me I have been awarded a Type 7 scholarship.
 
OK- we are a bit 'green' to this process. What is a BFE? My son has received two nominations from 1 Senator/1 Representative. His medical file is with the waiver authority. Does anyone know if he could be one of the "1500 out of the 2000" nominated to receive appointments, or would he be a 'last minute' type potential conditional appt.?
 
"BFE" means big fat envelope, meaning receiving an appointment to academy. I can't answer your question about how your DS may fit into the appointment categories. Best of luck!
 
Maybe incorrect, but last I heard there will only be @1350 apptmts this yr, with them wanting a class size below 1100. The 1500 -2000 apptmt size was long gone. That is why many are concerned about waivers.

The way the system works is they are given a WCS. That WCS is now put up against everyone else's WCS on the MOC slate. The highest WCS wins the apptmt. The apptmt will be conditional on getting the waiver, but the spot will be held until the decision is made in this issue. For your DS he will be on 2 slates before going over to the NWL.

The NWL (National Wait List) is not somewhere everyone goes on. If they believe that nationally the candidate is competitive from their WCS for that pool they will than place their name on the list. This is where you may be confusing Mass Mailing March. An MOC candidate can be appointed before the mass mailing because it was the slate of 10. The NWL comes off when the board closes which is basically March.

Both appointees, MOC or from NWL list it is still the same...conditional on the waiver.

The question will be about if the AF will waive the issue, because it could be a factor of even plan B.... AFROTC. DoDMERB DQ's, it is the branch that waives.

Congrats to all! I am surprised how few Type 1 and 2's have come out this yr. I wonder if they changed the % they are awarding to those types,, in other words reducing that number and increasing 7s.
 
Pima, can you explain type 1/2 Scholarships to me? DS received a type 7 which can be converted to a 3 yr type 2 if he wanted to. Do I understand that correctly that if he chose a private or out of state school converting it to a 3 yr type 2 would be what he should do? Do they award a 4 yr type 2 as well? And what is a type 1?

I have a slightly related question. The Type 7 "pays college tuition up to the equivalent of the in-state rate at a public school." If DS receives a Type 7 and is accepted to and chooses to attend a private college/university, how do you determine the "in-state rate"? Looking at the College Locator, the rates in some states vary widely.

DD got her second "not this round but based on rank you are rolled to the next” from AFROTC. This has solidified her feelings about taking the NROTC scholarship that she was offered in December and has given her time to find the positives in the school she was matched with even though it was not her top choice.
 
Type 1: Any college and tuition is paid...regardless. 4 yr
Type 2: Will pay up to 18K a yr and you can make up the difference. 4 yr HSSP.
Type7: IS cost up to 18K. Cannot make up the difference.

EX: OOS UNCCH, for Type 2 you can make up the difference, for Type 7 you would convert to Type 2 3 yrs. NC candidate that is IS would take type 7 and be covered.

Type 7 converted to 2 3yrs means they will pay up to 18K and you can pay the difference for the 3 yrs. HOWEVER, freshman year is on your dime.

You also need to accept the fact that even if ADROTC goes to 70% nationally (unrealistic) for SFT, if they are on scholarship Type 2 3 yrs OOS, you are left
with 2 yrs OOS if they don't go to SFT.

The conversion from Type 7 4 yrs to Type 2 3 yrs really needs to address what if when it comes to cost.
 
Congrats to all who have gotten an AFROTC scholarship from the latest board. I know how excited I was when I got the good news in December. Like Pima, I too am surprised that almost every AFROTC scholarship awarded from the HSSP board to members of this forum has been a Type 7? Seems like a big change from past years!

First, Cogratulations to all!

I have wondered about this as well. There is no IS/OS at a private school, so can a type 7 be used at any private school and just be capped at 18,000/yr?
 
Packer--no. Type 7 MUST be used for IS tuition, per my son's award letter. If another school is desired, then it must be converted to a Type 2 3 yr award.

I understand this and for me it is just a curiosity question as my son will use his type 7 for IS tuition. But a private school just has tuition, it doesn't make any difference if you are in state or out of state it is the same and I don't recall seeing a public school restriction on it.

Ok my reading skills or memory must be slipping because here is from the AFROTC website and I am sure it is on my son's letter too:

I think you can use it to pay tuition at any qualifying (whatever the criteria is) school up to the 18K amount max and you can make up the difference if you convert it. My son had to make the decision right away to convert or not on the endorsement letter he submitted.

It goes on to say that the other option is to convert to a Type 2 3 yr scholarship, which will pay up to $18K at any AFROTC affiliated school, regardless of tuition amount.

So the only way a Type 7 scholarship can be used is at a public school that is affiliated with AFROTC. Otherwise, you must convert to a Type 2.
 
If you met the board but you did not receive a scholarship, are you eligible to meet the next board/s or is that the end of the line?
 
I am not AFROTC affiliated, but in case the subject comes up with those around me, I'd like to better understand that conversion...

In our case, suppose an AFROTC Type 7 is awarded. We are in California. The tuition+fees at UCLA are about $13,000.

Does this mean that a California based AFROTC Type 7 awardee may convert to Type 2, and then get $13,000 for years 2,3, 4 at, say Occidental College (Private, tuition about $41,000)?
