It's always a possibility but the numbers keep getting smaller and smaller. I heard (rumor only) that the total number of side load scholarships available for class of 2015 was 80 3 year and 108 2.5 year. Of course, by definition, the Marine option numbers come from that and are therefore smaller. DS is going thru the process of pulling together his application now. I also have no idea how these numbers relate to the Advanced Standing slots available, if at all. If Advanced Standing (at least) doesn't come through for DS then we'll look at PLC, and if that fails OCS. I like to think he's competitive for a scholarship, but who really knows?

I know money for college is always important and one thing we all look for. That being said I would recommend NROTC MO regardless. Its a wonderful program that has been a tremendous benefit to my son. He's far more disciplined and works harder at his studies than he ever did before college. I thought he was physically fit before he left for school. His fitness now is just incredible. He's also made a great bunch of friends. I would look at it as leadershpi training and if a scholarship comes out of it, or even Advanced Standing, then so much the better. But it has to begin with a desire to serve - otherwise its difficult to make it through it (IMHO).

I would definitely do it freshman and start of sophmore year and if a scholarship doesn't come through look at PLC as an option. The program would help you prepare for PLC and PLC can come through with some tuition assistance.

Exact number are 80 three year and 108 2 year scholarships for class of 2015. These are from NSTC directives. Currently no 2 1/2 years for any class. Every year these change according to the needs of the navy at that time. IMO you will need to be ranked high on the OML to get a sideload scholarship.

Are both the three year and two year scholarships awarded this spring? Does the directive as to when to apply come from the CO or done independently?

In DS's unit all college programmer's apply. They are told when to apply by the CO. The unit racks and stacks them within the unit and PNS gives appropriate recommendation. I do not know if all applications are forwarded up the line, but I assume they are since the decisions are up to the board(s).

No idea if 2 year scholarships are awarded this year, but if I had to guess, I would guess not. If I were in charge I would rather make the decision on 2 year scholarships when they have had another year under their belt. They'll also have to go through the same/similar exercise next year anyway to determine who gets Advanced Standing.

Edit: I suppose they could still award some 2 year scholarships this year and hold a large number of them for next year as well. But that's all conjecture on my part of course.

I believe the 2 years are given out to class of 2014 and the 3 years are given out to class of 2015 this spring. The question is how many advanced standings are given out which certainly seems to be the mystery. Otherwise-end of line except for OCS. Dad of patiently waiting 2nd year mid on news of scholarship.

Kinnem, I would agree with your guess about only three year now and two year scholarships later. My DS's unit has not asked for apps to be started yet but it will likely be soon. Perhaps the side loads are awarded after all of the incoming 4yr freshman scholarships are determined by April?

Can you please explain OML? Thank you!

In each unit the mids are ranked OML (order of merit) consisting of GPA, PRT scores, leadership, EC's and PNS evaluation. I don't know how many are applying for 2014 but an educated guess would be 300-400. If the programmer is in the top 25% of the unit, I think they would have a good chance all IMO.

I would think PLC is still an option if an MO doesn't get Advanced Standing. Hope your DS (and you ) hear good news on the scholarship. You don't know when the board meets do you? I can't get anything out of my son.

Terp, I can't dispute your educated guess. But I was wondering how you arrived at it. And is that a Navy number? MO number? or both?

Kinnem-I am not sure when the board meets. My educated guess comes from 100 + units, I would say 3-4 programmers per year per unit. My sons unit only has 2 programmers out of 13 mids in his year.. I can't find any data on the total mids(scholarship+programmer) in the country. I don't have the number of MO's in the scholarship but would think it is included.

I was wondering the same. In all the publications I've seen over the past two years, the number of total college programmers, or even a single class of college programmers, has never been seen by these eyeballs. I wanted to know this about a year ago when putting together a comparison of NROTC and AROTC. In AROTC, about 75% of the MSI and MSII are non-scholarship (college programmers), but I got the idea that in NROTC, the % was under 20% or even under 10%.

Right. I think my DS's unit has ~10 freshman mids not on scholarship, but I'm not certain about that. I believe they have ~24 freshman mids remaining in the unit so I think my guess is conservative on college programmers. Hard to tell. I have no idea what a "typical" unit looks like. I agree the MO scholarships are included in the total of 80 3 year scholarships. In any case the total of 80is <= the number of units. So if we average our two units and come up with 5 or 6 college programmers per unit I would guess you need to be in the top 10% or damned close to it.

But... THIS IS ALL GUESSING (although I like to think it's intelligient to which my wife would immediately disagree),
