Please post your favorite movies on the military below! I look forward to watching them and I learn something everytime.

This is a list of the few military movies I have watched:

Watching RIGHT now: An Officer and a Gentlemen
G.I. Jane
Top Gun
Saving Private Ryan
Annapolis
and I have watched numerous other war films as well.

Definitely NOT G.I. Jane or Annapolis (the latter doesn't even qualify as a military movie).
 
How about some old ones... "A bridge too far" :tank1: or "Battle of Britain" anyone?:shake:

A couple of others:
We Were Soldiers was a rather cliched movie- but I really like it anyway because it's pretty much how most soldiers want to see themselves.
The Green Berets is a horrible movie with a memorable song - despite it being so corny it's kind of a cult classic for me.

The Fighting Sullivans
Hail the Conquering Hero.
I really like that last one. The boys come home from Guadal Canal and help save one more man from himself.
 
Master and Commander, with Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany. Great action scenes at sea, but also examples of good and bad leadership in naval life that resonate today. Not a "great for the ages" film, but most enjoyable.

U-571, with Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson. Will bring new-found respect for submarine life, as well as an appreciation for the political pressures that can put military lives at risk.

Glory, with Matthew Broderick, a young Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and a big-name cast. One of my all-time favorite movies. Admit it makes me cry every time.

Oh, and Heartbreak Ridge, with Clint Eastwood. A classic hard-bitten Marine with heart of gold story, with some good comic moments along the way. You get some sense of the pride of being a Marine.

Did you catch Game of Honor, the recent Showtime (I think) documentary about Army-Navy football? I still see it showing.

Of course, anyone who has served can pick the heck out of military movies, the things that just aren't true, right or done just for the dramatic effect. That doesn't mean they aren't enjoyable overall.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Band of Brothers. I know it's a miniseries and not a movie, but it's great
 
Since OP said military and listed An Officer and a Gentleman, I'm throwing A Few Good Men out there. Not a war movie but the dialogue is unbeatable. So many great lines. The final scene is riveting.
 
It's a documentary, but "Speed and Angels" is a cool look at some of the last F-14 pilots. Plus, it has beautiful cinematography and is available free on Hulu!

To continue with the Naval Aviation theme, "The Bridges at Toko-Ri" is a classic. "The Caine Mutiny" is another (old!) but good one about the Navy in WWII.

I'm glad Luigi mentioned "Last of the Mohicans." Great movie.
 
a couple of more recent movies that I just thought of- both directed by Clint Eastwood and both about Iwo Jima from both sides of the battle: "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters from Iwo Jima" ("Letter's" is the better of the two). "Restrepo" which came out last year and is a documentary about a platoon of 2-503 - 173d Airborne in the Korengal Valley. Then a couple of oldies both of which were so good that they were used in IOBC to teach leadership and Law of Land Warfare when I was a 2lt: "Twelve O'Clock High" and "Breaker Morant" about the Boer War.

And my alltime favorite which ends in war so not exactly a "warflick" but is all about the Army - "From Here to Eternity" which includes the best rendering of Taps ever played in my humble opinion:

I was at Schofield for 3 years in one of those quads, living in one of those 1917 Quarters- and you just couldn't help replaying that movie in your head when you were running up the Kole Kole pass or FOD at night when taps was played.

Again maybe not classified as a warflick, but one of my all time favorites is Gladiator with Russell Crowe. Opens with a great Roman Army war scene. Also the chariot gladiator scene is a good example of effective teamwork and leadership. "No matter what comes out of these gates, if we work together we survive."
