I fell while ice skating on Friday night; I broke the bottom 1/3 of two of my teeth. I am going in for crowns this week. Is this disqualifying?

Nope. Nothing says you have to have a pretty smile to be at the academy or in the air force. Think about it..... Air Force has one hell of a hockey team. Wonder what their teeth look like?

Because we're on the subject of teeth, is it okay for me to take out my wisdom teeth? When my brother went to West Point, they actually asked him to take it out before BCT because there was a possibility that it may interfere with physical activity. Is this the same with USAFA?

The dentist said my son probably should take them out in a year or so . That was 2 years ago.... He is a 3 dig now... I understand they have to come out if you fly?

The packet that my son received mentioned that having your wisdom teeth out is the single most reason why academics are missed. I made an appointment for my son to have his out during school vacation in April. The packet also says that if you are going to get them out, have them out at least 6 weeks before reporting to I Day. The oral surgeon also mentioned to me that 17 is usually a good age because the roots have not grown too much yet. He told me my son was at the perfect age to have them out.

sportsmom is correct. The Instructions to Appointees handbook recommends getting your wisdom teeth taken out before I Day. I wish I could get them out however they haven't even erupted for me (I have really slow growing teeth- even still have one baby tooth that I'm getting pulled soon).

Thats cool. I mean I think that's cool LOL.
Recommends is correct and one day out of academics can potentially put you behind a week. There are those who do get them out at other times while at the Academy...

Ok, here is some general advice: if some medical work is optional, I would be leery of changing it between when DoDMERB clears you and I-day. Before or after are less risky. Basically, the less time you would have to fix any misunderstanding/additional paperwork, the closer your tolerances have to be.

As for wisdom teeth, they don't have to be out to fly, but if the docs think they might be a problem later on, they will want them removed before you end up in a flying program/AFSC. Missing some academics and having a follow up appointment later on isn't a big deal. Missing a month of pilot training IS a big deal!

My DS went to the dentist at USAFA and was told he probably would never need his wisdom teeth out-even if he flies. So unless they are bothering your son, I would let USAFA figure out whether they need to come out or not.

Hmmm. Unique issue with DS, kinda on the good side. He only has two wisdom teeth both on the top (DD 2014 was also this lucky). As of a 6 months ago they weren't far enough down for removal. I am really hoping they are close this time :shake: If not I guess he will wait until they have descended further.

I broke just about the same amount of my front teeth as a kid. I don't have crowns, they filled it in with ceramic, but similar situation. Anyway, I'm currently a candidate for admission and am medically qualified. They didn't even ask about it.
