Do retired AF officers get promoted based on their years of service in the reserves? My ALO was a Major and now is an Lt. Colonel. She has been an ALO for 10+ years and has been retired from 10+ years. Was she promoted due to her service as an ALO or is she in the reserves?

I'm curious...thanks!

You're not really giving enough info. Actually; it's more a little confusing. You said she is retired. If she's retired, she wouldn't be getting promoted. But if she's in the reserves, she can get promoted. Also; an ALO can be an individual's primary AFSC (Job) or it can be an additional duty. But there's also a lot of in betweens. In my state, most ALO's are retired. We also have a couple civilians. We also have an active duty. They can be active, retired, reserves, guard, or civilian. So, if you're ALO is still getting promoted, that leaves off civilian. She could have gone from active duty to the reserves. That's also very common. You'd be better off asking her.

CC is exactly correct.

I'm "gonna guess" and say that your ALO has been "out of active duty" for 10+ years but has since been in the AF Reserve and was promoted while doing her ALO duties.
