Can anyone recommend a town to stay at between West Point and NY.
We plan on leaving for R Day a few days early to spend some family time and take in the sites in NY City but would prefer not to stay too far from the Academy. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
 
My family is having the same issue... we were considering visiting Cooperstown (home of the baseball HoF) as a day trip. Has anyone done this? Is it worth it?
 
I haven't made the trek between the two but I believe Cooperstown is at least a 3 hour drive from WP. Suggest you consult mapquest.
 
I suggest Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow. It is a beautiful town on the Hudson with nice restaurants and lots of history back to Revolutionary times (headless horseman). They have a train station to NYC and it is located very close to the Tappan Zee Bridge. It is 30 mins or less up to West Point from there. The Sleepy Hollow Country Club will blow you away, the clubhouse is a mansion from the late 1800's that is massive! They are very nice and will let you kook around a bit, take your camera, awesome views of the Hudson. Good luck. I can suggest great stuff in NYC if you are interested (retired NYPD).
 
I also suggest Cold Spring which is right across the river from West Point. Charming town with great restaurants, shops, bed/breakfasts. Takes about 20 minutes to drive down Rt 9-D, cross the Bear Mtn Bridge and head over to West Point. About 30 minutes north of Cold Spring are the FDR Home and the Culinary Institute in Hyde Park, NY. which are good day-visit type things to do. Cold Spring is also located right on the Metro North line and you can be in Manhattan in 1 hour. Enjoy!
 
White plains is the way to go. it is the largest city between NYC and West point. It has great hotels, malls, restaurants. Considering i live in Westchester county and i am very accustomed with the area, sleepy hollow is nice, but white plains is great.

We have made a Cooperstown side trip before and enjoyed it very much. Lots of incredible baseball history there for the true baseball fan! It can be expensive to stay around Cooperstown and lots of youth baseball teams come to play at Cooperstown Dreams so lodging can be tough to find. I would try to have time also to explore the lovely historic village as well. You can park on the outskirts of town and take a trolley to the Hall of Fame. We drove through the Catskills on the way to WP and enjoyed that as well. New York is a beautiful state.

There are hotels, shopping, and restaurants in Fishkill and it's just a short drive to the train station at Beacon. There is plenty of parking and I think it's free on the weekend.
 
We stayed in Middletown. Its not too far (probably about 45min'ish) and hotel prices were normal priced compared to the more expensive stuff that's closer in to WP
 
New Paltz! It is 45 minutes away. The Mohonk Mountain House & Lake Resort has breathtaking views and IMO a must see. It is a college town and has plenty other amenities. mohonk.com
 
There are probably a dozen or so major historical sites/attractions up and down the Hudson valley within an 1-2 hour drive of USMA.

Beautiful estates, presidential library, etc.

Hit the Culinary institute for breakfast, etc

All largely up & down 9E

This makes Fishkill / Poughkeepsie a reasonable place to use as a base camp. yes, you do have to cross over the river to Newburgh (trivial), then over the mountain to the west gate, but for most major events that's still faster than trying to fight your way into Highland Falls (Thayer gate) from the South.

And when it's over you can leave from the NW gate (forgot the name) and be on 9W even faster.

If you make the trek to USMA, it's worth spending some time looking around. Especially once you figure out that you can get 5 days at some hotels for about the same as the just the peak days for R/A day.
 
Another fun thing to do near West Point is go to Orange County Choppers in Newburgh. We have watched them film the TV show many times and always enjoy seeing the latest project. You can ride by Paul, Jr.'s shop just down the road but they don't allow visitors.
 
Having grown up in surrounding area, I can suggest Spring Valley, Suffern or Nyack as good places. They are cheap and relatively close, about 30 or so minutes away from WP.

Not the best places to stay if you're interested in sightseeing but if you're looking for somewhere cheap, accessible to WP and not in the middle of nowhere, they are the places to go.

Just another data point, but Nyack and surrounds are close enough to NYC to be impacted by the traffic. Maybe it's just the Tappan Zee bridge traffic, but whatever it is, we've found what we consider better alternatives.

Further West (Nanuet) you can miss some of that, but you are in the NJ zone, which has it's own issues. But is also a handy spot to stay if approaching from the South.
