Sorry if this has been asked before. But I am trying to go to basic training over the summer before college. I do want to go through the SMP route, but don't have enough credit hours to currently do so. In the mean time, is there a way I can enlist in MOS 09R and just go through basic training? (not AIT or anything)

the best way to do that is to come to school next fall, enroll in ROTC, and then go talk to a recruiter. If you are enlisting first it is going to be harder to get on the track you desire. There is nothing wrong with enlisting for an MOS and then contracting sophomore year with ROTC and becoming SMP. I'm finding it all depends on the recruiter and the unit you are working with to help you get on track to becoming an officer vs. their desire to have a soldier who fills one of their billets.

My son was able to join Reserves in March his senior year of high school. He did basic training that summer split option, so AIT was the following summer. He contracted SMP the fall of his sophomore year. MOS 88M is one where AIT fits in during the summer. It didn't matter which MOS since he's now a Cadet in training.

My DS is 88M in the Ohio Guard(if he attends AIT-doubtful but never say never:rolleyes:). The SMP split option he's on is joined Guard in June, right after graduation, so he could be assigned to unit closest to university rather than home(3 hr. one way). He will attend BCT this summer(praying nothing happens to lengthen his stay at Ft. Jackson, he should graduate 3 days before classes begin in the fall.....cutting it very close).

The SMP option is great, but please be very, very sure before you raise that right hand -- no ROTC contract and you will serve under the terms of your Reserve or Guard contract instead.

Good luck.

Ft. Jackson in summer. That will be pleasant. Hope he likes sweating while standing still in the shade!

Yes, our son did BCT at Ft. Jackson 2 summer's ago in the record heat. Very miserable. Same thing - started right after HS graduation, with just a couple days to spare at the end before college starts. It works, but it's tight and you pray there is no injury or reason he gets delayed. He did come out very focused and driven though, so it was good.
