AROTC Application

I am a candidate for admission to WP class of 2017. I realize it is extremely difficult to gain admission to WP, and since my career goal is to become an Army Officer I am applying for AROTC. I have two quick questions on the application:
1. Box 22 says desire to compete for a scholarship to an HBCU or to compete for USMA (then the three boxes say)

I desire to compete for an ROTC HBCU scholarship
I am not interested in an ROTC HBCU scholarship
I desire to compete for admission to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (Cadet command will share application information with USMA electronically)

Which box should I check, and what is HBCU?

2. Box 34 requires a 3 digit code for a desired major. Where can I find these codes (they are not listed in the application)? It also says that scholarships are issued according to the major selected. Does this mean that there are more scholarships for certain majors than others? What major would receive the most scholarships?

I am aiming quite high in my school choices for scholarship...My school choices in order (after WP) are: Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Georgetown, Virginia, UNC Chapel Hill and Fordham. What are my chances of success given the following:

ACT Superscore 31
Reading 33
English 33
Science 30
Math 28
Writing 29 (8)

I have been accepted to SLS at WP. Also selected as a Boys State Delegate.
I am a recruited athlete to WP (not football).

Regarding school list you need to consider a few things. First you certainly did aim high. Although you have excellent test scores they don't guarantee admission to any of these schools. You need to consider some backup schools where admission is more likely. You can't use a scholarship if you're not admitted.
Second. You need to consider cost in a couple ways. These are tight budget times and far more scholarships will be awarded to schools where you can get in-state tuition. Second, how will you pay for some of these schools if you don't get, or god forbid, you lose the scholarship. Admittedly you can probably get some other scholarships to help pay for these schools, but you need to consider these things.
Checkboxes - Obviously check USMA. HBCU is up to you and your circumstances, but you didn't list any HBCU schools.
Your academics look competitive but there is a lot more to getting a scholarship than academics.

OK...let's take a step back. Are you filling out a paper application, or are you applying online? If you are filling out a paper application, STOP. Go online and start the application there.
 
Well thanks for the response! Now that I know what HBCU is I can answer that question. I am filling it out on paper first and then when it is finished I will do it online. I agree with adding on some safety schools and will do that. Can anyone suggest schools with great AROTC that might fit my academic profile? Thanks again, big help today.

There is no hurry in completing the application. Do your school research and visits first. Talk to the ARPTC cadre that will help in the decision process. The first board doesn't meet until October. Use your time between now and then wisely. My DS visited schools talked to both the cadre and admissions, arranged for his interview and physical fitness test. By the time the first board rolled around the cadre at his #1 school was puling for him. YOU need to do the research and see where you see yourself fitting. Don't rely on others to be the work for you.
 
Need to know what you want to study (didn't see that in your post). If you are interested in Engineering or Business you can't go wrong with Clarkson (shameless plug).

I don't think that paper app is legit anymore. I didn't even know they still produced those. I just went on the website and started an application. It looks like you can save your info, and it is much more explanatory than the paper app. Out of curiosity, where did you get that paper app from? As an enrollment officer I'm trying to identify where paper copies might still be lingering.

If getting the scholarship makes or breaks your ability to afford college, you will need an in-state public that you will be easily admitted to which doesn't necessarily get too many ROTC candidates. I saw Virginia and UNCCH on your list. Neither of these (if they are instate) could be considered a safety. There was a recent thread discussing the merits of the various NC publics from an academic and ROTC perspective.

Paging Pima to begin the discussion...

If your family can deal with the finances, just attend a college where you are likely to be in the top quarter and get corresponding grades once you are there, do well in ROTC, get involved in a couple ECs, and keep your nose clean and you greatly increase the odds of getting a 2 or 3 year scholarship or at least get selected to continue on for an AD commission.
