Does USNA really take into consideration whether an applicant went to a sport camp or not? I mean I applied for STEM (fingers crossed) but I can't afford to go to the swim camp, which I really do want to attend, but will it hurt my chances if I don't go?

Whether or not you attend any of their summer programs makes no difference to your application.

In reality, probably little to nothing. It more of an advantage for you to come visit the academy and stay inside Bancroft. Same thing with STEM. The good thing about STEM is the amount of interaction with mids. It give more free time; therefore, more time to learn from mids. I attended both NASS and STEM and thought STEM was the most productive.

NASS also seems highly overrated by applicants towards admissions. It is nice to go but not a make or break if you can't or choose not to.

DD didn't go to STEM, NASS, a sports camp, nothing. Didn't decide to even apply to USNA until after the deadline to apply to NASS last year and was still offered an appointment. At the CVW in January the admission officer told her the key is still the academics and test scores. As Navy2016 said it is about the candidate getting the opportunity to experience USNA and meet the Mids to help them make a decision.

Personally, I consider the value in the visitation programs exists in the opportunity for a prospect or candidate to spend time at USNA to get a firsthand view of the school, the yard, the midshipmen, etc, so that they may make a more informed decision as to whether USNA is an environment in which they will excel.

I have seen instances in which the candidate was helped or hindered by participation in a summer program. It is not likely that it will override academic records, etc., but it could be the margin that makes a difference for one candidate over another.

If you want to be a recruited athlete then a sport camp in your sport can be a way to get the coaching staff to take notice. But since swimming is against the clock it's probably not as important as some other sports.
