we're flying ds to USAFA (on his own) in April for an appointee tour and he will need to take a shuttle from Denver to COS.

Any companies to avoid or that you'd recommend?

I have always found Super Shuttle as a great service. They do a great job from BWI to USNA. I have used them at other airports. You can pay up front on their web site and check in at their booth at the airport. Door to door drop off and pick up. Make sure you have a return scheduled if he knows his flight time. If he checks in on internet they will give him a pick up time at USAFA depending upon when his flight leaves Denver. They usually get you to the airport about 1 and 1/2 hours before the flight. I think drive time from Denver to USAFA is about an hour but it depends upon how many people in the van and where they are going.

Good luck to your son.

Colorado shuttle from DIA to COS

Proud mom 2016,

Suggestion, if you can change his flight from going into Denver to Colorado Springs. It is a much smaller airport and I would bet the Academy would even, pick him up. I would bet this would be a lot easier for him. Just an idea.

Thanks. the flight into COS was cost prohibitive. we can use FF miles into Denver and the shuttle ends up being much less than the flight. I'm sure it would be easier on him but he's willing to put up with a bit knowing how much PW is going to cost us.

Thanks for the suggestion though..I did check.

I am the parent of a 2nd class (Junior) cadet. We live in Colorado and go back and forth to COS frequently. I have never seen or heard of the Academy picking up or dropping off any cadet at DIA -- as suggested above. I do not believe that service has been offered in the past. However, appointees staying at certian hotels in COS for tours may have a shuttle from the hotel to the Academy and back to the hotel available. I would check that information before relying on the Academy providing transportation as an option. Also, I do not believe that Super Shuttle goes to COS or to USAFA (I have never seen a Super Shuttle van in COS or at USAFA). Go on the Super Shuttle website (search Super Shuttle Denver DIA or some combination of those words). The Super Shuttle website does not list COS as a pick up or drop off location. I would call them now to find out whether they in fact go to COS. You may need to post on this or another parent website and find a family who is flying out for orientation who can drive your student to and from DIA. Maybe I am wrong but I would make some calls now -- to be sure whether this type of transportation actually exists.

There are a few shuttles that do run from DIA to COS I just wasn't sure which to go with.

He's staying at the Academy Hotel. Do they have a shuttle or will he be able to walk from there?

It will be too far to walk. I do not believe the Academy Hotel has a shuttle, most likely your son will need to arrange a cab to drop him off at the Academy and pick him up again at the end of his day.

One correction to my earlier email -- the Academy does have busses going to DIA and returning to the Academy from DIA (cadets reserve and pay for a seat) for Thanksgiving, Winter Break and Spring Break. But those busses are not offered at any other time -- including during summer sessions when cadets have to arrange rides to and from DIA. As for a shuttle service from DIA to COS, do an on line search -- I think you will find one or two companies that go between COS and DIA, but I am not sure that they drop and pick up at his hotel. He may have to take a cab for a portion of each trip. It is not feasible to walk from any COS hotel to the Academy -- USAFA is not like West Point or USNA where there are one or more hotels within walking distance of the main gate. At USAFA it is 5 miles or more from any hotel to the cadet area of USAFA-- this is true even from the Academy Hotel which is the hotel closest to South Gate. There are no hotels within walking distance of North Gate (also North Gate is accessed off a very busy, multilane, high speed highway -- walking is not feasible). A taxi from the hotel may be necessary -- or again, start posting on these parent sites for a parent whose son or daughter is visiting at the same time and who can help you out.

Agree with many of the others - my son is a sophomore and I asked him today and he said he'd never heard of any shuttle services or the possibility of any way to get to Denver from the academy other than getting a ride with friends or the academy arranged buses (or a sponsor). However, I did a quick search and found the following, which I'm guessing is one you're looking at since it drops/picks up right at the Academy Hotel:

Interesting because I didn't know after 2 years this was a possibility! I would agree though that you'd need to get a taxi from there - I know for big events (Orientation back when they had it, I Day, etc.) there are shuttles, but I think they're provided by the academy and that's just one stop point. I'm sure the hotel can help him with a taxi though.

DS flew into DEN on Sunday and took the shuttle to the Academy Hotel. They arranged for a cab to meet him there to take him to the Chapel area. The shuttle was $45 and the cab ride was $28. Still saved money by flying into DEV. :thumb:

PS: Make sure you make reservations at least 24 hours in advance.

Thanks for this information so I know how much to send for the cab fare...still hoping to find someone staying at the Academy Hotel and going to the Academy the same day.

The Academy does run a shuttle to and from both DEN and COS from the base of the ramp. It is for cadets only and runs on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring breaks.
