So we are at the point that prep school is moving up the list. Currently a hold at USMMA, no ROTC scholarship, no from USNA. DS has a dream and there HAS to be another path. Does anyone have info about Greystone Academy in TX. They have an 88% success rate of getting an appointment (so says the website) Any feedback on the best prep school is appreciated!!

I live just down the road from Greystone Academy. I've had to opportunity to hear the "head guy" (founder)--not sure of his title--speak at different events and listened to his presentation for the academy. Very impressive. My impression is nothing but positive. My oldest was going to attend if her appointment hadn't come through to USMA. It seems to me that they really give outstanding personalized attention to each "cadet" that attends. A detailed plan is established at the onset that focuses on that cadets weaknesses in order to develope their resume for reapplying to an academy. It's worth a visit for sure.

Don't believe everything you read about them, especially they stuff they publish themselves.

I would recommend you search and read as much as you can about Greystone before you commit to that expensive prep option.

I agree---very expensive, and there is always more than one way to skin a cat!

I would ask them how many of their unsponsored students have received appointments THIS year for each academy that you are interested in.

This year is SO different than in year's past with several academies reducing their class size. Don't rely on past statistical data. I'm talking about going as unsponsored - which I assume your DS would be going as since you have not mentioned any scholarship.
IMPO - unless sponsored - you are just as well off going to a college, enrolling in ROTC and reapplying from there..

Sponsored - CP schools are a great way to spend the next year while reapplying.
Unsponsored - spend your money at State U.

I agree with Luigi and the others.

I always say the Devil is in the details. When you start pulling out stats and percentages, read the fine print matters.

88% of what? 88% of those that receive noms? How many get noms? 88% if they carry a cgpa higher than X.YZ? What is the avg cgpa?

In other words if 100 apply and only 10 get noms, 88% of those get apptmts., you are talking really about 9% of the class, not 88%.

Same with the cgpa issue, if the 88% comes from a pool of 3.75 cgpa, and the avg cadet/mid has a 3.2, chances drop dramatically, and that 88% takes on a new meaning.

Now if 100% of the class has noms, and cgpa is not a factor, plus 88% of them still get appointments it is a horse of another color!

Investigate the details of that 88%. Cliche, but true. If it is too good to be true, it usually isn't! Not saying anything negative or it isn't true, just saying use the time to ask the right question.

+1 to BUFF81, Pima, and Lugi

A Self Prep's ACT/SAT scores, GPA, and other individual factors (even home of record) are more important than which college/prep school they attend.

Past rates are not good indicators. Ours will be "terrible" this year compared to last year, and that year was worse than the one previous.

What is important is to pick a school where your DS will be challenged, encouraged, and feel like they "belong". Even more important is that, regardless of an appointment or not, they are prepared to go to the next level - where ever that may be.

As far as attending Greystone, it has been the best decision I have ever made.

Here, academics are pushed very hard (our class average GPA this year was a 3.77 out of a 4.0). Without the time management skills that I have learned my past year, I would have been nowhere near my gpa of a 3.77 at a state college. What is truly impressive of our class gpa is the fact that all the courses (18 credit hours first semester, 17 second semester) we take are at Schreiner University, a 4 year institution. Greystone is the only prep school in the country that is located/affiliated with a 4 year university.

Now as far as statistics go, 100% of all Greystone students have earned a nomination to a service academy. 88% of all Greystone prep graduates receive an appointment. Where ever you look, no other school in the country has a success rate like that. That is because the people who come from this program are scholars, athletes, and honorable leaders.

I sincerely recommend Greystone to any academy hopeful.

Sounds like a script from the admissions department.

Folks,

This site and forum exists to educate people about the SAs as well as prep schools. However, we are not here to promote one school over another. There is a fine, but clear line between providing information in response to requests and blatantly pitching a school. Posts crossing that line will be edited/deleted and the posters will receive infractions.

From another Greystone Student

Like Gerrit (horse.hater), I was a Greystone student this past year. I can attest to everything he has said to be true. But then you all would have to take what two actual students say about the program as truth, go figure.

Many of you seem to have a misconception of cost. Greystone Preparatory Academy does not charge anything to be a part of it. Where the high cost is from is the enrollment in Schreiner University. This is what makes the Greystone Preparatory Academy unique from and gives it a higher rate of success than all the other preparatory programs, because it shows the Academies that your son or daughter can handle the coursework of 17-18 credit hour college courses and perform well.

I believe Schreiner gives Greystone Students a small scholarship for being part of the Greystone Program and Greystone this next year will be providing scholarship money to students, although I am not sure how to obtain it. All other non school specific scholarships can also assist in the payment of tuition at Schreiner. As I said before your money will be spent at Schreiner University for a Freshman year of college so if after this program your son or daughter desires to go to a civilian school or has an ROTC scholarship he/she will be going in as a sophomore. Furthermore, if your son or daughter earns an appointment he/she will be saving you much more money than if he/she went to a civilian college instead of trying a prep school.

Very Respectfully,

Shaun

Our son was accepted to USMMA, then did not receive a DoDMERB waiver (not enough time elapsed since he had surgery). He will be attending Greystone. It is expensive; however, he will have a full year of college, fully accredited college under his belt. No matter what happens, he can move forward with those credits. He will be able to prove his physical capabilities while attending Greystone.

My suggestion to anyone considering a prep school - Research their websites and CALL them. Get as much information as possible! We did that and our son decided he wanted to attend Greystone. We have been incredibly impressed with the responsiveness we personally have received from Greystone. I am sure the other prep academies are good too. Just do your research. We'll let you know next spring how this all turns out.

KP Mom...

DS followed your suggestion when reseaching "prep schools" (websites, calls to admin & alumni, etc), and came to the same conclusion... that Greystone was the most appropriate choice for "preparing" for a service academy, as well as the most appropriate choice for Plans D-Z (considering the college credits that would transfer).

Plan A worked out and he is attending USNA (well prepared by virtue of the Greystone program).

Good luck to your son, and I hope he enjoys his experience in Texas.
