I have seen a couple of these threads start for the Citadel and VT so I thought might as well start one for VMI. I'm excited to start meeting some of my BRs!

I'll be the first one to say it.

There is no VMI Class of 2016. You are the Rat Mass of 2013+3 until Breakout.

Weird? Yes. That's how it goes at the Very Merry. You have to earn your class title by going through the Ratline. Calling yourself a member of the Class of 2016 prior to Breakout will get you unwanted attention from upperclassmen.

This is all part of the so-called "class system" at VMI. You will become intimately familiar with it. One of the many weird things that sets VMI apart from some of the other schools discussed in this forum. It's best to embrace it! You don't really have a choice....

-A former member of the Mass of 1996+3. Class of '99 since February 1996. :thumb:

I've heard about that terminology and how the class system works but for some reason it didn't register when making this thread haha. I appreciate the reminder and definitely want to avoid the harassing! I wish I could rename the thread now..

Your wish is my command- renamed

Um.. you mean 2013 +3.. 2012 +3 is now the class of 2015. It's confusing. I was told it goes by your dykes graduation year +3.

Pretty sure I'll be at VMI in the Fall for Rat Mass 2013+3. I received my appointment in December and sent in my stuff for STP. I have a 3 yr AROTC to an in state school, but praying that the transfer to VMI goes through. If not . . . . will be convincing my parents to invest in my future :)
I'm a Biology major (but love history/poli sci, too) What are you guys doing for conditioning? I'm trying to bulk up some muscle. Based on threads here, it sounds like it's hard to get nutrition and keep your weight during Rat Mass.

You will be allowed receive packages of food from home and will have a "food box" in your room. Ask Mom and Dad to stock up on your favorite protein bars, snacks, etc and send shipments frequently. You wont have any means of refrigeration or heating items in barracks. Also in the beginning of summer your room will be very hot when it's closed up so just keep that in mind in what you ask them to send you. Chocolate will just melt. DS also thought getting juice boxes was the best too, even though they were warm. You will probably lose weight..yes, but the food box can help if it is stocked. During the academic day he ate lunch from the box rather than Crozet.

I'll be a Rat in the Ratmass of 2013+3. I'm from Southern California and I'll be training with the Army ROTC at VMI.

I'm from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I will join the Ratmass of 2013+3 as an international Rat (a pretty rare case, I believe, in VMI). I'm majoring in Economics and Business with an eye for Intl Studies as a double major, and I have opted for Army ROTC, but won't be commissioning.

Pretty thrilled to be in VMI!

My DS son will be in the Rat Mass of 2016. Coming from Seattle, Washington. He will be attending STP.

So Cal? yeah! Inland Empire or LA or SD or High Desert or the Coast...speaking of the coast, where is the closest surfing beach near VMI? anyone?

I will also be joining the Ratmass of 2013+3, I Live in Richmond Virginia. And yes the closest surf is going to be Virginia Beach, which is about a 3.5 hour ride.

Congratulations to all! Attending STP is VERY worthwhile -an incoming cadet gains more than just the 1 academic class out of the way.
Enjoy your remaining days of senior year, work out - it will help you be prepared for matriculation and the days that follow! larrys mom

Starting to get nervous! Will be there in the Fall, I'm Army and International Studies!

Does anyone know of an efficient and reasonable priced way to get to and from Lexington? Like I said above, I am from SoCal and transportation is an issue. Last time I visited VMI, I flew in to DC with my dad and he rented a car. I will be going alone to STP and a car rental is out of the picture as most car rentals don't rent to people under 25 or something. Any ideas?
