If I were to take a gap year and possibly reapply to schools, would I be allowed to reapply for a scholarship as a freshman and reuse my HS record? In general, what is the policy for gap year students? If I were to take classes at a local university over the summer, would that mess up my status as an incoming freshman?
Thanks

If you've got college credits, and aren't on track to be a full time student for 8 semesters you aren't eligible for a 4 year scholarship. You might also want to consider enlisting or the SMP program if you are going to put school off. If you didn't get a scholarship offer this year it's not going to get easier.

Do you absolutely HAVE to take a gap year because I don't know why on Earth you would want to if you just go straight away with a scholarship. I saw that someone asked about this from a couple of years ago, I think that you can only apply for a HS scholarship if you are still in HS. It is POSSIBLE that they allow gap year students to apply(saw something about it, but it was on the AFROTC website, you should do a search on this site), but you can probably forget about it if you take any summer college courses. You would have already officially graduated so taking college courses would make you an official college student. Perhaps there are some extenuating circumstances that will force you to take a gap year, and if that is the case then I am sorry and hope that everything works out, but if this is just something that you want to do, I would caution you to consider the consequences that this may have on you're life and career. Of course, this is your life so this is really none of my business:redface:

I want to take a gap year for the travel and work experience - if I do it, I will work as an au pair in Germany. I was thinking of taking college classes over the summer just because I'll be home working & like to keep busy. There was a constitutional law class that looked fun and I want to start learning Arabic. I can take language classes at an institute rather than at a local university though, so if getting credit would mess things up I'll just do that.

Would you mind telling me more about SMP? I've heard of it before but I don't think I quite understand what it involves. Thanks!

Are you asking about Army, Navy or Air Force ROTC?

I'd like to know the answer to this as well. I was surprised to learn a few weeks ago on this Board that NROTC allows a college freshman who is NOT participating in NROTC to apply for a scholarship. It was not ever determined in that Thread whether the chances of getting an NROTC scholarship from the non-NROTC participant pool is better or worse than from the pool of those participating in NROTC as a freshman without scholarship (college programmer).

I seem to recall you posting before but cannot remember the details. Are you wanting a gap year b/c you didn't get into an Academy and would prefer that?

*edit* never mind, I found your prior post. You have an AROTC 3 yr. AD scholarship to Univ. of Vermont, but you want to see about tranferring that to U of Chicago, where you were admitted EA ... check my comment to you on that thread.

Credits

In regard to the college credits....my son has over 40 credits from dual enrollment and he received a 4yr AFRTOC scholarship. He explained that he will be in college for 4 years as he plans to double major and wanted to get some basics out of the way. Once explained in that manner, it was not an issue. Good Luck!!!

I will have over 30 college credits by the time my 4yr AFROTC scholarship is activated, most are from dual enrollment also. When I saw on the website months ago that you can only apply for the HS scholarship if you have never been enrolled in college I panicked. But when I called their offices I was told that "as long as I don't have my diploma in hand", I am still eligible to apply which I did. Dual enrollment credits before graduation and college credits after graduation are two different things. At least, that is my understanding. Hopefully there is a loophole shootingsilver can take advantage of. I would never take a gap year (even if I wanted to, i'm sure my parents would be able to "talk" some sense into me
:rant2: :eek3: :rant2:.....:guns4::help::rocket:..... :stretcher: ) but going abroad for work sounds cool, I hope it all works out well for you Shooting!
