Still Stuck in the Dark

At this point, it seems that at least a firm majority on the forums have heard SOMETHING back from West Point. I got my NWL letter on 21 Feb, and I haven't heard anything since. Does anyone have any insight as to what dark corner my application inhabits at this point? Does it look better or worse now that we've passed another wave of acceptances/rejections and I've survived?

Thanks!

I just got 3Q'd last Thursday... I hope I get some news by next week.

The class is almost full. The latest decision (I heard this directly from ther Sup of WP last week) is for the Class of 2016 to be about 1050 people - orginally we had been working with the number of 1150. The Class of 2015 was 1250 people. Therefore far less people will get offers from the NWL than in previous years.

However, if you have not received a rejection letter from WP you still have a chance. As people turn-down their offers (they have until May 1 to accept or reject their offers) people on the NWL will get offers. Also some people with offers (a very few) will have them revolked due to low final grades, trouble with police, injuries etc.

I do not have exact numbers since I do not know how many will reject their offers, but I think at least 100-200 people will get offers in the next 30 days.

BigNick, any perspectives for candidates who are yet to get any word from WP concerning admissions (including NWL placement)?

They do not give you your position on the NWL. However, you can call your Regional Admissions Officer (the names are in your WP Portal) and they will give you an idea of where you stand. If you have not received a rejection letter you are still in the running. As mentioned in another post, additional slots will be opened as people with offers turn them down (this could be up to 50-100 "new" positions).
Bottom line - call your Regional Admissions Officer directly- do not talk to a clerk or adminsitrative person about the NWL.

As of a week ago COL McDonald indicated it would be a very low number off the NWL this year, if any. The class was almost full with under 100 offers still outstanding. She also indicated she would start pulling unaccepted offers in anticipation of May 1.

I'd have to check my notes, but the figure I heard for 2016 multiple times during the conference was 1150, 100 down from 2015. Which was 100 down from 2014. Over 15k applicants this year. Between the current reduced class size trend and increased attrition they expect to get back to the new authorized size before long.

They are also being more selective on MAPS this year, with less receiving offers. (Testing or behavior could keep you out)

And, the clear message from multiple directions is "less tolerance for screwing up as a cadet" (Direct quote). Not necessarily more regs, but significantly less 2nd and 3rd chances before separation. Especially for drug/alcohol offenses, blowing post, etc. And for sure for Article 15 items which are normally legal issues, not just regs.

This is not just the pendulum swinging on alcohol, the Army force reduction is driving some of this. You won't get separated for a bad inspection, but "If your performance/behavior indicates you are not committed we are going to free up that slot for someone who wants it more". (Direct quote during DMI/TAC briefing)

They also expect to lose some firsties yet this year. "Some manage to screw up each year less than a month before graduation and will be separated". Based on recent reports that prediction appears to be accurate. And USMA is effectively a dry post as of today.

One last thought for those still waiting- In our state we had a 2016 prior service appointee who made the decision to decline so he could deploy with his unit. For those of you anxious about getting in, his example is one to ponder. This is not about college, it's about serving! :thumb:

I know the waiting is hard especially if you received the same email my son did. He still has no word some strange questions one morning at PT but not a real answer. So I just want everyone oneof you to know you have had to work hard to get this far and you are all in my thoughts. Remember Westpoint would like to accpet every kid that is qualified I would never want the job of sending QNS letters.

That was another comment by COL McDonald.... the quality of the applicants continues to climb. More qualified applicants competing for a smaller pool.

I can't remember the specifics, but also she mentioned some timing changes to better align with ROTC scholarship windows. I think it was that the QNS letters went earlier this year to allow the candidates better chance at ROTC scholarship windows.

So while it was harder being told no earlier, it ultimately worked to the advantage of the candidate in that they had more time to pursue backup plans.

Hawk,
I tend to agree that there are more kids that are bright leaders applying to the academies . Especially with this economy being what it is today. Also excuse my typo of the word accept .

Sorry, did not see the West Point DAD:rolleyes:

Yep, just a Dad. One fortunate enough to be involved in a good parents club with active FFR, grads, and a couple of hundred current cadets.

Which is a good source of info, but not authoritative. Probably directionally accurate, but can vary based on company, year, and even individual. And is history based, like trying to drive a car by watching your rear view mirror.

Current information is far more critical and harder to find. USMA did a great job in April with briefings for the Parent clubs at USMA. We heard from just about every section of West Point leadership. Some myths dispelled, some misunderstood areas explained. New policies positioned.

All clubs should try to participate, as it's a live data feed, and is needed to prevent our information from becoming stale. And I'll say it, lots of info on the web outside of USMA itself and circulated as gospel has become stale and is no longer accurate.

i wonder if the QNS's at this point are rolling were all sent out at once, because I still haven't heard anything. At this point I've pretty much given up hope, how exciting and strange it would be to to hear something from them

Hard to swallow my son has gone through this twice but he admits he should of asked for an ROTC nom he was second for congress. He still is going to call his regional admisson perosn and ask a few questions he has . He already is meeting with rotc to ask for a nomination to apply for next year. His goal to have all but first semester grades and fall sports in by the end of June

Call your Admissions Regional commander

Your Admissions regional commander would know excatly what your status is. Call him. I suspect that he was holding your file hoping for a way to profer an offer. Those that are definitely in or definitely out have heard by May 1st.

What I heard was they held a few including my son as they thought they were going to be able to make them offers and then some kids accepted whom they had thought were going to say no and the class size was reduced. So as I told my son if you want you can go through this again and you should be proud to make it this far.

nnmfan,
I do not know the exact numbers but Admissions had selected some top candidates to fill the vacancies created on May 1 for the rejected offers. However, the rate of acceptances was higher than expected. It seems that your son was very close. Many do not make it first try so if he is still interested, have a talk with his Regional Admissions Officer and find out what specificially you need to do to improve his record for next year.

Nick,
Thanks for the support
I am not wanting to sound like my poor kid nonsense this was his second try. He did what he was told he needed to do and then some. That is why he really wants a personal meeting with admissions. He told me he does want to apply again and yes he will ask for ROTC nomination as well . He just feels like a personal meeting might give him more details . I do have a cousin who volunters as a liason in Texas looked at my sons stats and does not get it at all as his score is very high. Then again I live in a very highly compettive district where we have combined two congress people into one. Much harder.
My question is if you are the only ROTC nomination from a school and are fully qualified is that an automatic in? What really is the difference if he graduates ROTC from a college ? He has just finished the paper work to apply for that
