Thank you so much for posting this! I have been itching to ask how many scholarships were given out this year but didn't know if there was any hard data out online yet. Might I ask, where did you get these stats?

That's a lot more scholarships offered then some people thought. I wonder what the total is of those that actually accepted the scholarships.

Congratulations to those who were on the receiving end.

That's about 500 more than last year if that number is correct. Really surprised since there were only 211 given out on the first board, according to my DS's ROO back in January.

This info came from AETC/afrotc headquarters..

My DS accepted his scholarship offer.

nice to see these stats, i must of been close then i had a 28 ACT, but sadly I didn't get one

Remember in this breakdown they did not state the % of tech vs.non-tech, nor the breakdown for SAT/ACT Tech vs. non-tech.

Traditionally a non-tech will need a higher SAT/ACT because they give much fewer non-tech scholarships than tech scholarships. For example only 5% go to Type 1, but only 5% of that 5% go to non-tech. I.E. out of the 77 scholarships @4 nationally went to a non-tech major.

Type 2 traditionally gives 15-20% to non-tech @ 40 nationally.

Type 7 is 25% of the 80%, which = @280 scholarships.

In total it = @325 scholarships nationally. That is insanely competitive if you are intending to go non-tech.

It is just something to think about when you apply for a scholarship as a 2017 next yr. Do not try to game the system just for the scholarship, it will bite you in the wallet if you do.

Would like to see how many offers were refused.

Our DS refused his Type 2 offer for AFROTC after receiving an AoG- West Point sponsorship.

It was still very unusual/weird/freaky calling and turning down that offer. The only good part is hoping that it will enable another candidate to follow their dream!

If I could go back a year, I wish there would have been someone that would have told me that is not the end of the world if you don't get a scholarship.

I had two nominations to the Academy, didn't get in. Above average in every category for HSSP, didn't get one. Worst case scenario. I was freakin destroyed.

To those of you that are reading this that didn't get what you set out for, DON'T GIVE UP! It killed me watching everyone on this site get what they wanted last year and then I got absolutely nothing. Don't get caught up in it.

Not to brag, but I am top 3 in my AFROTC class now and got a scholarship after my first semester. It can be done! The majority of people that commission aren't even on scholarship so don't sweat it!! I would almost say it is better if you don't have a scholarship because it means you are there because you want to be there, not for the money.

To those that are getting HSSP's right now, congrats but dont let those tests scores lead you to think they make you a good cadet. Some of our worst cadets throughout the detachment are HSSP. But they sure get good grades though!

Airpower and :thumb:

I agree Nate, do not fool yourself that just because you have a scholarship in hand the incoming det will think you are going to be the best cadet in the unit. They won't.

You will be just another C100 face for the 1st few weeks. At many units the ones they watch from minute one are the cadets that are re-applying for the AFA. The reason is simple, the CoC may submit an ROTC nom. They want to have as much info as they can collect in a short time span period.

That being said those on scholarship also have a huge motivator to perform well. LOSS of a scholarship. IMPO I would think the majority of AFROTC scholarship recipients do want to go AF, the reason that they are at that det. is because the school was their 1st choice and the only way to afford it was with a scholarship. College tuition, even for state universities as an OOS can be over 40K a yr.

The one issue I would say to any scholarship cadet that is on scholarship is to remember that if you do not get selected for FT, you will be dis-enrolled and if this is the only way you can afford to attend that school, have a plan B in place before matriculating to the college.

DS had a friend who was a scholarship cadet, went to FT, graduated top 20%, came home and decided AF was not what he wanted in life. Dis-enrolled 1st day of ROTC C300. AFROTC came after them for @40K to be re-paid ASAP. It is a tiny loophole that many do not know exists. Graduating from FT = C300, opting out with out a payback is no longer available. IF his friend did not go to FT, he would have been able to walk away, but he went and graduated.

Gojira's DS (NROTC) scholarship mid was disenrolled weeks before commissioning. They are on the hook for 143K because the Navy said he was cut due to him not living up to the standards set forth in the contract. He was not even given the enlistment option, just cut us a check.

These are rarities, but for the ones that with euphoria of getting a scholarship and just signed on the dotted line without understanding the "IF" issues, it was very costly.

The other issue is do not assume that because you are scholarship it will mean you will get your dream AFSC at your dream base. If you are only going into this for 1 specific career field and envision being stationed in HA, Germany, Eglin, etc., think long and hard because 4 yrs in college is the fun part, 4 yrs AD in a job you didn't want, at a base you never imagined (Minot, Cannon, Eilson, etc) is not going to be fun. Reality is the beautiful bases are like any business, supply and demand. Demand is high, supply is low, thus, chances are not on your side.

For those who dream of flying fighters, and that is the only reason they will take AF over Navy or Army. I wold suggest to investigate even deeper. Statistically getting UPT from AFROTC is pretty good right now, but what you will find out is @30% will fail out of IFS (pre-cursor to UPT), 10-15% will bust UPT. Out of the remainder, only 10-15% will get fighters. If 100 enter IFS, 6 will get fighters. They will not be at their 1st operational base until they are an O2, or 24-25. They will be in the "student" world until that time. They will also not be able to leave the AF until they are 32 on a good day.

I am not trying to tell me not to take the scholarship, I am just trying to remind everyone that the scholarship was the easy part in their life, and with each step, the hurdle is bigger.

Good luck.

Thanks

Cool, thanks for the stats. I have been searching for ones for this year and haven't had any luck. My son has accepted a CLS and I am so proud of him!

Correct me if im wrong but is it all about ACT or SAT because im thought it only played a partial role

Your are correct that it only plays a partial role. Nonetheless it play a role and a significant one at that.
