How is July 4th observed at the Academy? It's during Plebe Summer, but is listed on the calendar as an observed holiday. Is there special liberty or extra pushups or what?

It was pretty much a normal day for us, but not sure what they do now. It was the second or third day of plebe summer for our class. We had a field meet (so basically more running, push ups, tug of war, and other "fun" games. We did get a BBQ and we got to sit on the grass and eat. It was the first time since we had arrived we were able to take a breathe and talk to one another for about 30 minutes. After that we sat in formation on turf field and "ooh'd and ahhh'd" on command from our upperclass the fireworks display they do in Annapolis. It is actually one of my most vivid memories of plebe summer and us sitting in formation doing that still makes me laugh to this day! Not sure what they do now, Hurricane?

My plebe summer it rained. The fireworks got delayed so we did drill and played various games indoors. It was probably one of my least favorite plebe summer days.
Generally what happens is they go out to Farragut and stand there and watch fireworks. I can't remember if they get a special dinner/ice cream/whatever, I think they might. Bottom line is that it's a normal day for 85% of it and you get one semi-relaxing hour or two max towards the end. It's weird because it's right in the beginning and you're still not quite into the plebe summer rhythm yet.

Good for you for being able to take a joke! Best quality during Plebe Summer, whether as a plebe or a detailer (did both). Good luck, I think you'll do well. For what it's worth, I liked July 4 both times around.
