Does anyone have any info on the USAFA powered flight program? DS just found out he will be starting in the fall. Any syllabus/book info would be appreciated.

Our son has it second summer session so I may be able to tell you more after then but of course that will be the summer schedule and not the school year schedule.

Like all cadets who have taken the program, he will be provided with the information he needs when needed. Don't worry. I speak from experience having taken powered flight.

Hornet Guy,
What, no gouge? How is an aspiring aviator to survive? LOL

lol, haven't heard that term in awhile. Powered Flight is a very low-key program and is not intense like IFS or UPT. I happened to get strangely lucky, I think I was the only one in my class that never did stand-up. Regardless, with things like that, everyone was walked through it. We memorized the bold face, but there wasn't much to memorize and it wasn't all at once. If he wanted to look at the syllabus for fun, I'm sure plenty of friends have it. But, it really won't add that much value to the program. I had a blast and I'm sure he will too!

Yeah, it's low threat.

When he gets the bold face, memorize that, and the stuff they foot-stomp. It's a fun program. I'd compare it to IFS, just without the stress (or crazy week of blitzkrieg academics).

As hornet said, you don't need to look at anything ahead of time. The boldface is simple, and they help you through stand-ups, when you have them. My class didn't very often. The basic syllabus is 10 flights. The ninth ride is a "check ride" of sorts in that you must be able to take-off, fly a pattern, touch-and-go, and land without instructor help in order for your 10th flight to be a solo. It is fairly time consuming (you spend half your day at the airfield even if you aren't flying) but it's totally worth it. I loved the program. And the bold face is coming back as I head to IFS in a couple weeks! (2.5 years after powered flight)

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know if they are using the "new" airplanes yet?
