Moving with the military tip

Well for the first time in 20 years, I got an email telling me I had to submit a complete inventory of what we'd be moving next week. It got me wondering how many newbies to the military would think, oh I have to do this and just do it without thinking because they didn't know better. When a friend said the same exact thing to me about it, I thought I'd post it here as there will certainly be newbie movers around here.

The movers are required to do a pre-move survey. In the beginning when you don't have 5 kids and 20 years of stuff, its very simple and easy and it seems like no big deal, but never are service members (at least not in the AF) required to put together an inventory for their packers/movers so if you are asked to do it, its not your responsibility and you do not have to do it.

I have enough to do to prep for 3 shipments for an overseas move and typing up my inventory list for them, isn't on my to do list.
We just responded to the email giving them my phone number and telling them to call me to schedule an in person survey or conduct the survey over the phone but I would not be submitting a list. I am still waiting for that call.

In encouraging news, when dh complained to quality control about it, she said she'd NEVER had anyone request that of anyone before. Hopefully its just some newbie packer who didn't know better.

We never had to do that either. They would come to the house and do an inventory, but it was always to see how many days it would take to pack up and size of truck to use. They also wanted to see how many picture and dish boxes to bring, along with their brief of shipping liquids and spices.

I am curious of why they are doing this procedure because it doesn't make sense to me. The last system I knew of was if anything was lost or stolen you had to claim on your personal insurance, the AF did not reimburse you. The AF would pay for items that were damaged.

Plus, there is a security method in place, the trucks will be weighed empty, than with your goods after leaving the house, and finally prior to delivery.

It doesn't make sense at all to me because even if they are doing this to keep you under your weight limit, if you went over they will charge you anyway.

Finally, many members do DITY for at least part of their HHGs, are they asking you to hand an inventory for those goods?

No my guess is its some newbie or lazy surveyor for the company that doesn't want to come out and was going to guesstimate how many boxes, etc he'd need based on my inventory. The woman from the company arranging the move said she's never had anyone asked to do it before.

My first shipment goes Monday...I've yet to hear from anyone about that one. I'm not having a really great feeling about this move at this point.

We did learn that b/c of where our house is located our shipment is being organized from a different base than dh's assignment and its in another state as well so I'm wondering if that is confusing everything. We're several hours from the other base so its totally confusing to us why its being handled this way.
